A suicide truck bombing has killed 10 people and badly damaged a bridge linking Baghdad to northern Iraq. The attack came on a day US forces said they had killed four people in a raid on the Shia district of Sadr City. Also on Tuesday, the US military announced the deaths of four soldiers in attacks in Baghdad and Mosul.

The bridge over a branch of the Tigris river collapsed on Tuesday when the bomber detonated his explosives-rigged vehicle at a central section, sending three cars plummeting into the water, police said. Six people were wounded in addition to the fatalities.

Link to north The bridge is a key link connecting Baghdad with the town of Taji, around 40km north of Salaheddin province. Security officials said the blast partially destroyed the concrete structure of the bridge. "Rescue teams are searching for survivors from the cars which went down after the attack," one official said. Fighters have regularly targeted Iraqi infrastructure, especially bridges, in an attempt to cut off vital road links between Baghdad and various cities.

Tuesday, August 14, 2007 : A suicide truck bomber attacks a bridge north of Baghdad, killing at least 10 people, Iraqi police say.

Grieving relative in Sadr City

The Thiraa Dijla bridge in Taji lies on the main road from Baghdad to Mosul.

Earlier, US troops said they killed four gunmen in Baghdad, but local officials said at least three of the victims were civilians.

Separately, three Iraqi ministers whose party had been boycotting government meetings, attended the latest session.

The move comes as politicians from some of Iraq's main political parties are holding informal talks ahead of a summit called this week by Prime Minister Nouri Maliki to try to resolve their differences.

Also on Tuesday, the US military said four US soldiers had been killed in two separate attacks in Baghdad and the northern province of Nineveh on Monday.

'Bridge collapses'

The suicide lorry bomber attacked the Thiraa Dijla bridge at noon, police said.
