Media Advisory: Home Care Workers To Tell Congress How Deficient Long-term Care Coverage Threatens The Well-being Of Seniors

by SEIU (reposted)
Friday, July 6, 2007 : Legislation Would Help Fix Weaknesses in America’s Long-Term Care System Washington, DC-- On Tuesday, July 11, home care workers will urge the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee to pass legislation establishing a national insurance program for adults who might become functionally disabled or currently have severe impairments and need affordable long-term care.
The CLASS Act, formally called the Communities Living Assistance Services and Supports Act, is a critical step in addressing the long-term needs of the millions of Americans not prepared for the costs - especially as the need for home- and community-based services increase with the aging baby boomer generation.

The home care workers, whose duties include dressing, grooming, cooking, transferring, and toileting, will help give voice to the estimated 228 million Americans currently without long-term care coverage. Dozens of SEIU Healthcare members from across the country are expected to attend the hearing to support the need for health care reform.
