United State's Social Forum: A Sacramentan's account
A Sacramentan's brief and personal description of the first day of the United States Social Forum in Atlanta, Georgia.
If ever you have felt that within your struggles for justice and peace you were alone, I beg you to please disregard those fears. People from all over this country have come together in Atlanta, Georgia for the United States Social Forum, and for me it has been a deep sigh of relief.
We have met people from even the smallest communities in this nation who all share the same vision. People whose struggles have been our struggles, whose triumphs have been our triumphs.
Due to a common exchange of experiences we have found common ground.
Another world is possible, Another U.S. is necessary.
The opening march today from the state Capitol in Atlanta to the Civic Center, highlighted something that can be easy to lose sight of, hope.
This was not an ANTI-anything march. It was pro-peace and pro-community.
As people marched in the heavy air and hot sun through downtown Atlanta, they danced, chanted and laughed ,all smiling and warm.
Communists, anarchists, media reformists and women’s rights activists alike.
