Hate Charges Dropped In High School Anti-Gay Flier Case
The fliers were found scattered around the parking lot of Crystal Lake South High School. The leaflets contained a picture of a male student and stated "God hates fags," authorities said.
Police said the fliers were intended as "get even" with the male student with whom the girl and a second female student who helped distribute the fliers, had quarreled.
The girl, who is not being named because of her age, will be sentenced August 15. The court has a wide range of sentencing option, ranging from court supervision to detention in the state’s juvenile corrections system
Prosecutor Thomas Carroll said that even though he agreed to drop the hate crime charge filing it had been justified.
"We think the conduct was clearly inappropriate, clearly offensive and done with the intent to alarm and disturb, Carroll told the Daily Herald. "The defendant has admitted as much by her plea."
But the teen's attorney said the charge wasn't justified.
