Rally Brings Much Needed Attention to Youth’s Employment Needs
Their platform, developed with high school students, centers around giving young people the tools they need to enter the workforce. Their second goal is to encourage hiring of young people at fair wages without previous workplace experience. The youth at the rally—clad in bright yellow shirts screaming “Jobs Stop Violence”—show passion and knowledge of the task they are undertaking, and progressives should fight alongside them.
It has always been difficult for young people to get their first job, as employers often require experience before they will hire; how this experience is to be obtained has never quite been clear. This frustrating endeavor is nearly a universal experience, yet it does not effect all equally. For working-class people of color, it is a much greater obstacle than normally understood. If one does not recognize that discrimination is still prevalent in the work force, then one must reconsider their reasoning.
