Miguel Zafra is an Indigenous photographer from the Mixtec region of Oaxaca, México. For the past 18 years, he has documented the Mixtec and Afro-Mexican coastal communities, Mexican social movements and Indigenous immigrants working in the U.S. His emotionally powerful work emphasizes the human context within the greater political/cultural landscape.
Mr. Zafra has worked as an independent photojournalist for the late, great El Andar Magazine, among other publications. His photographs have been featured in France’s Geo magazine, and on the cover of two anthropology books. The U.S. Library of Congress holds two of his photographs in their permanent collection.
He has exhibited at the State Capitol Building in Sacramento, as well as in Fresno, Davis and the Bay Area. His work was also featured in the exhibit “Indigenous Mexico,” at Parc de la Villette in Paris, France.
