During this week-end camp, women will have 45 different classes to choose from. Our faculty are master teachers from many different traditions, including West African, Congolese, Afro-Caribbean, Brazilian, Japanese Taiko, and Middle Eastern. Opening and closing programs will be facilitated by two powerful women from Native American indigenous cultures.

Teachers will have an opportunity to demonstrate their own art during an introduction on Friday night and a teacher performance on Saturday.

We are excited to be able to provide facilitated drum circles on Friday and Saturday nights where women can create community and use the drumming skills they have developed in the classes.

We are committed to creating a positive and powerful environment for women to teach, learn, and perform this incredible art form. Our mission for the Born to Drum camp is to empower women in all aspects of their lives through the drum, which represents not only a musical experience but a cultural experience as well, as we bring together women of diverse backgrounds. The camp is proud to include wonderful women drummers who are masters of a variety of traditional drumming styles.

Nuru Abena will be joining us from Boston this year. Nuru is a pioneer of the Women’s Drum Movement, and has been instrumental in bringing thousands of women to the drum. Nuru uses drumming to unite people from diverse backgrounds and to dispel the ignorance surrounding African music and diaspora Cultural folklore.

Another accomplished drummer joining us from NYC is Nydia 'Liberty' Mata. Nydia was born in Cuba and has been drumming for over 30 years. Mabiba Baegne, born in the Congo, joins us with her expertise in Congolese and West African traditions. We will also have the privilege to study with Jackeline Rago, who is a masterful musician from Venezuela. Other traditions represented by our faculty will be Native American, Brazilian, Japanese Taiko, and Mid Eastern drumming.
