Klamath River Fish Kill Memorial Rally

by Klamath-Salmon Media Collaborative (wilriver [at] riseup.net)
Due to the degrading condition of the Klamath River, continuing juvenile kills, and the 68,000 adult salmon lost in 2002: A memorial will be held at Pacific Power's headquarters in Portland, Oregon Friday, May 4th 2007, at 11am.

In Solidarity
PacifiCorp’s dams continue to kill salmon and in turn Native people and their traditions, year after year. This rally is being held in solidarity with the Tribal members who are traveling to Omaha, Nebraska to hold a healing ceremony for the Klamath River at PacifiCorp’s parent company Berkshire Hathaway’s share holders meeting (owned by billionaire Warren Buffett). Not everyone could make it to Omaha, so we’re showing support for our friends and family by going straight to PacifiCorp’s headquarters and demanding that they take responsibility for the disaster they’ve created on the river. This memorial is a time to remember and honor what has been lost on the river, and to strengthen our resolution to protect and restore the river’s health, our health, for generations to come. This event is not a funeral, not a time to wear black and say Rest In Peace; it’s time to take a stand for what’s right and say: Enough is Enough! Bring the salmon home!

More Information
PacifiCorp's Klamath River dams are devastating the people of the Klamath. Salmon have not traveled and spawned above the dams since the first was completed in 1917. Klamath Tribal Members have not fished for salmon in their ancestral homeland since 1917. Poor water quality has caused a drastic decrease in fish (and specifically salmon) populations. The degraded condition of the river and of the subsistence salmon fishery is causing serious health problems like diabetes, heart disease, obesity, etc for many Native people on the Klamath River who rely on the subsistence fishing. The loss of fish also means the destruction of culture for tribes with river/salmon based religions and ceremonies. the Klamath once had the third largest commercial fishery on the west coast, now Native and non-native fisherman have to deal with low numbers of fish and ocean closures...many people live below the poverty line on the Klamath River because of this. PacifiCorp is responsible for this disgusting environmental injustice, it's modern day genocide, people on the river are really hurting and its scary to think what the fish populations will look like in 10-15 years as negotiations with PacifiCorp for dam removal continue. For more information on the effort to remove the Klamath dams and current news check out http://www.karuk.us (campaigns and press release) and http://www.klamathnews.org.

Message to PacifiCorp: We are not going to take this injustice! Take responsibility for your corporate negligence and remove the dams now!!

Message to rate-payers in Portland: PacifiCorp is taking advantage of you by saying they would rather put in fish ladders than remove the dams. This would raise power rates. Supporting dam removal promotes a healthy Klamath River and river communities and keeps rates down.

Message to Warren Buffett: By encouraging dam removal you have the opportunity to make world history as a hero, or continue a failed policy that will incur enormous costs for the company, the environment and the State for years to come.
