SFSU Students Protest Higher Fees And Privatization Of Education
San Francisco State University Students Walk Out
On April 26th, students from San Francisco State walked out of classrooms to protest higher fees in education and the privatization of public education.

Students met at 10:00 AM in the middle of Malcolm X plaza. As more students started arriving, a few organizers began to speak through bullhorns encouraging students to gather and prepare for the walk out. Students began chanting, "the students united will never be divided" as they marched towards the center of campus. Once there was more momentum, students began to file out of class and join the crowd. Estimates suggest there were about 500 students earlier in the march. Soon afterwards, the students went inside different buildings to encourage students to walk out. At the highest point of the protest there were about a thousand students marching.

Later in the protest, the crowd marched into the administration building. The fifth floor which houses the President Corrigan's office was locked and Corrigan was not on campus. After the building fire alarm went off twice, students made their way outside and regrouped before heading into the lobby. Students used the central stairs as a stage and let multiple speakers from the campus community talk. Afterwards the floor was turned over to students. By about 4:00PM the protest had dispersed.

Protests against CSU tuition rates were also held at Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Long Beach, and several other schools statewide.

At the current tuition levels, 1 in 3 students will have to drop out of the Cal State System because they will not be able to afford to stay in school. EOP (Educational Opportunity Programs) has been drastically cut by the current administration and 46% of alumni graduate with debt.
