Response to Article about Oakland teen violence

by Amanda
The Oakland Council wants to fund programs for students to get them off the street, where they encounter gang violence.
In response to today’s newspaper article in the San Francisco Chronicle about Oakland’s youth is extremely intriguing. Violence is everywhere, nowadays. I feel that it is a very good idea to fund programs to get students off the street. In the article it states that at least half of today’s youth in Oakland has been in a violence situation at least once in their life. Students are getting into gangs and being a part of gang violence. It is a serious situation and should be brought to the public’s attention. It is heartbreaking to see that students have to fear about gun violence. Some student had a rally about how student live in fear for their lives. Students should be focused on their education; however they are not being able to do that. At least now the council of Oakland is trying to find a way to get students off the street by creating activities for them. It is definitely a good start in trying to stop violence with students in Oakland.
