Sometimes You Win
UCSC researcher Shaye Wolf worked with organizations to force Chevron to cancel its intrusion of a fragile ecosystem by halting the building of a liquified natural gas terminal adjacent to the Coronado Islands.
I found Chris Magyar’s article, “Sometimes You Win” particularly inspiring. As a student interested in social change and current events, it is refreshing to come across victories such as Wolf’s. It is important to keep companies and policy-makers on their toes, and the way Wolf tackled the issue with different groups coming from all angles is inspiring. Her passion and determination to stop the LNG terminal reminds us that perseverance and creativity working towards social change can reap good results, and the fight is always worth it.
Now that the public is more informed of this issue, we can continue to fight in this as well as other important environmental issues, because as Wolf asserted, it will take diligence to keep the LNG terminal out of our waters.
I am glad this story got published to encourage others to take action with important issues, environmental or otherwise. Although stopping the LNG terminal appeared impossible, Wolf went for it full-throttle, and I hope we can all keep her efforts in mind when there is a project that needs our attention. I commend you, Good Times, for publishing an article that reminds us that there is no battle too small or too large, and most importantly, that sometimes you do in fact win.
