Provive,Protect and Prove: Helping the Unisured

by Katherine Donnelly-Crocker (kdonnell [at] ucsc.edu)
Help the Unisured Week, April 23rd-29th.
Providing services to the less fortunate civilians in our community, which may lead to the expansion of health care of in our society, while keeping prices down.
April 23rd, 2007

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Katherine Donnelly-Crocker and I am a first year student at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). Growing up in Southern California with a mother who runs a non-profit organization which provides health insurance to low-income families, I have been more than blessed to have sufficient and consistent health insurance, since birth. However, after establishing a new lifestyle in the city of Santa Cruz, I have slowly become more aware of the number of civilians whom are less fortunate and are underinsured, or have no insurance at all.

After traveling through the cities of Santa Cruz, and neighboring community, Watsonville, it is evident that numerous people can not supply their families, let alone their children, with health insurance. Although health insurance may be a profound issue in our county, I can not fail to recognize a more profound conflict; the lack of care available. The one and only hospital, that I am aware of, Dominican Hospital has been proven to be one of the most expensive hospitals in the nation. This is a result of the services provided to children and families whom are underinsured, or even worse, not insured at all. This causes other civilians, whom are insured, to cover the costs which were not met through the uninsured patient’s payments. Nonetheless, I feel that our uninsured patients deserve the exact same treatment as our insured patients.

Through my concern and fear for a failing future, I strongly urge our community to participate in “Cover the Uninsured Week”, which takes place from April 23rd through April 29th. Results may be found through various types of activism. Though the donation of money is very effective and generous donation, I strongly believe that physicians whom donate their time, education and care will have the most effective outcomes.

Through your support, as well as our communities, I believe that Santa Cruz County families will no longer struggle to find, and pay for a doctor, but rather be fortunate to be surrounded by an immense amount of resources.

Thank you for your time and support.

Sincerely,

Katherine Donnelly-Crocker
