Illinois Bridge - brand new and too narrow to accomodate traffic - another mess.

by Francisco Da Costa
Right by Cargo and 3rd Street lies a bridge that serves all the heavy vehicular traffic on 3rd going north and south. The Illinois Bridge was built by Shimmick and Homer to address a light rail going to Pier 92 and beyond from Pier 80 - also to accommodate vehicular traffic. The bridge is too narrow and one of those million dollar projects - that has come to haunt the City and County of San Francisco.
Much was made of the brand new Illinois Bridge by 3rd and Cargo. A couple of hundred feet from the old bridge that provides vehicular traffic to millions that ply on this bridge - today.

The brand new Illinois Bridge was built to divert the vehicular traffic and also accommodate some light rail traffic from Pier 80 to Pier 92 and beyond.

The fools just found out that the bridge is too narrow. Over $20 million has been wasted on the bridge.

In the interim the Muwekma Ohlone Park and Sanctuary was destroyed.

People living near the brand new Illinois Bridge forced to vacate and others have to deal with the adverse affects - first from the construction and in future from the cumulative pollution.

Our SF City calls itself Green but does everything possible in poorer neighborhood that defies logic and quality of life issues. We just celebrated Earth Day - and anything open and green is found in the Southeast Sector - the last frontier in San Francisco.

One of those areas use to be the area around the Muwekma Ohlone Park and Sanctuary.

At one time Catellus Corporation was behind this brand new Illinois bridge. Catellus Corporation jumped ship - spme years ago. The SF Port Authority has failed once again with lack of Accountability and Transparency.

Just imagine building a brand new bridge and it stands now all ready to go - but it is too narrow and this means - liability.

Same with the $700 million T-third Street Light Rail Project - it is a joke. The rail tracks are not aligned. The schedule is a mess - one has to wait for 30 minutes mostly and some time as long as 45 minutes.

The T-Third does not have sufficient trained operators to operate the Light Rail. MUNI drivers are pissed off and Mayor Gavin Newsom is busy with extra curricula affairs. Aaron Peskin wants to take on MUNI and the Union - and we passengers are left holding the bag. What is going on?
Bring back the MUNI 15-bus - it served everyone and did a good job at that.

Worse still the bridge at 3rd and Cargo (the old one) and the bridge at 4th and King - and prone to fail. Imagine the liability if passengers are hurt and die in an accident.

We have the same clowns Sophie Maxwell who is inept, ignorant, and very arrogant. A sell out Supervisor of the highest caliber. Jose from SFCTA and Bevan Dufty talking the talk but cannot walk the walk.

They all wasted $178,000 celebrating a fail T-Third Light rail in the presence of Nancy Pelosi, Willie L. Brown, Sophie Maxwell - all clowns that have done the people injustice.

The SF County Transportation Authority with Jose and his counterpart at the Board of Supervisors (BOS) - Bevan Dufty - before that Jake McGoldrick and Tom Ammiano. One could not find a worse bunch of idiots.

The Islais Creek over which the brand new Illinois Bridge is built has caused serious problems before. A $15 million conduit project is a White Elephant. Most of the citizens of San Francisco are not aware of this waste of money.

$15 million dollars of conduits under the Islais Creek - doing nothing and worse still inundated with water from the Bay and the Creek.

The SF Public Utilities Commission with Susan Leal, Sophie Maxwell, others all stupid to the very core - wasted this money. No soil assessment was done on land that is land fill and very prone to liquefaction.

Where is the Main Media on this one?

Anyway, the point here is have a narrow brand new bridge that costs the tax payers millions of dollars and cannot be used as projected and planned.

Who is really responsible for this one? Call Sophie Maxwell to find out and find out if she really know about this mess: 415.554.7670 or e-mail her at Sophie.Maxwell [at] sfgov.org
