Last Wild Buffalo Being Tormented as I Type

by Eric Stewart
It is noon here in West Yellowstone, Montana and the agencies that are a part of the Inter-Agency Bison Management Plan, the very agencies that stated that there would be greater tolerance this year for bison migration, have begun to chase buffalo off of Horse Butte. Many of the bison present are pregnant females and they will experience intense stress as they are chased, at top speed if the past is any indication, some ten miles back into Yellowstone National Park, being the only animal that is required by law to observe an invisible boundary line.
Many of us had our fingers crossed that these beautiful and magnificent creatures would at least be allowed to give birth before being harassed. In the past, several day old calves have been forced to run many miles.

Montana claims that they are trying to prevent the spread of brucellosis but were that the case, elk, which have been known to transmit to human under natural conditions (unlike buffalo) would be targeted. This is a fine example of what happens when biologists aren't calling the shots regarding the only continuously wild herd of bison in America.

The biggest danger in transmission of brucellosis is through an aborted fetus and these hazes, when times thusly, often result in just such abortions.

This is the first in what is bound to be a string of dark days over the next month or two.
