Arrest of 13-Year-Old for Writing on Desk Should Be Wake-up Call for City, NYCLU Says
by ACLU (reposted)
Sunday Apr 8th, 2007 10:32 AM
NEW YORK - The New York Civil Liberties Union today condemned the treatment of a 13-year-old girl who was arrested after she wrote the word "okay" on her school desk. The NYCLU said the incident sheds light on the fatal flaws in New York City's use of law enforcement to impose discipline in classrooms.
“No child should be arrested for writing on her desk,” said Donna Lieberman, NYCLU Executive Director. “This child’s arrest is the logical and predictable result of school discipline policies that treat our children like suspects and address minor infractions of school rules by charging children with crime. The mayor, the police commissioner and the chancellor set the stage for this event and others like it by turning over school discipline to the New York Police Department.”

“It's time for New Yorkers to demand a major overhaul of school discipline practices and the restoration of the nurturing educational environment our children need in order to learn and thrive,” Lieberman added.

According to news reports, Chelsea Fraser was handcuffed and placed under arrest in front of her classmates at the Dyker Heights Intermediate School on March 30. Police demanded that Fraser empty her pockets and take off her belt before handcuffing her and leading her out of the school and into the back of a police car. Fraser faces charges of criminal mischief and writing graffiti.

Fraser's mother, Diana Silva, reports that she was denied access to her daughter for three hours as she was held in handcuffs at the precinct.

"I'm appalled," Silva told reporters. "[H]ere we have rapists, murderers, and you're taking a 13-year-old kid? Wasting valuable manpower to arrest a child who wrote on a desk?"

A report released by the NYCLU and ACLU last month, Criminalized in the Classroom: The Overpolicing of New York City Schools, shows that a massive and aggressive police presence has transformed the city’s public school classrooms into hostile and dysfunctional environments that damage students and disempower educators.

The report and additional information on overpolicing in public schools are available at http://www.nyclu.org/policinginschools.

States Begin to Implement a Federal Soviet-Style Vision for America and It's Children
by onthewingsofhelios
Sunday Apr 8th, 2007 8:17 PM
The police state mentality of the public schools is a reflection of the mentality of the world planners, who are increasingly setting policy for the United States through global systems such as UNESCO. As Bush is quietly merging the United States into his family’s dream of a North American Union cog in the New World Order under a United Nations banker controlled Soviet-style bureaucratic system of world planning, America is being deliberately transformed through federal direction into a Soviet United States where father State plans to monitor, control, and dictate the future of each citizen from cradle to grave. As crazy as that sounds, our educational system is falling under the power and cultural influence of planners from other world regions such as Eastern Europe who have no history or respect for freedom and who are trained to view the average human as little more than a higher level animal that needs to be managed and molded into the model Soviet citizen.
The solution for America is to resist all federalization and centralization of power. The American Way deliberately sets up systems that do not allow centralization of power because inevitably with centralization of power and decisions, you get heavy handed, cold hearted, inappropriate, tyrannical solutions. Only the intelligent action applied to a specific local problem can arrive at the right response. In a militaristic, Soviet-style federalized system, this discretionary power to act intelligently according to the particular situation is removed from the teacher or principal of a school. In the Soviet system, committees set rules which must be followed by the local school, or else. It is this Soviet-style system of central committees making arbitrary rules that everyone must follow and the desire to micromanage people’s lives as if they are property and not free people which is the root of this insanity. Such a Soviet system has a particular intolerance for any breach of Father Government’s rules and believes in ruling with the stick. It all comes down to a foreign system being imposed on the American people without their awareness of the bigger picture that the United States is being subjugated to a Soviet-style world management system. Centralized systems are sold as being more intelligent and more efficient, but history has shown that they do not work except to oppress and crush the majority of those forced to live under them. American cities and states need to jealously guard their freedoms from the federal government and refuse to go along with these police state systems. We must question the pretexts being used for federal and global take over and policy planning of our schools and children. Since September 11th boogiemen, coming plagues, environmental disasters, and other potential threats have been conveniently used as a pretext for taking over cities and states on all levels and spending huge amounts of money to set up a police state. But many believe that 911 was an inside job carried out precisely to justify this federal and global consolidation of power and control.
No matter what the problem, the best solution will come from diverse free people on the local level based on their actual situation and limiting the power of government to intrude on the privacy and individual rights of man and child. We need to limit the intrusions of government into the schools and into our children’s privacy and personal lives and to set limits on the attempts to socially engineer their values, dehumanize them, or to ignore that they are children and also may have other limitations which make zero tolerance policies especially hurtful. I hope capable people will take a stand and not just go along to get along, understanding that our very way of life, freedom and dignity are under attack through these federalized systems of control.
