Climate Change and the SF Public Utilities Commission

by Francisco Da Costa
For thousands of years the First People have taken care of Mother Earth. Had we learned a lesson or two from the First People - we would not need an Al Gore to introduce an issue that is evident. 300 years ago, most of California was pristine - now see what we have done with our concrete jungles. While progress makes things easy - we humans, mostly have not curtailed greed, power, and blatant materialism that adversely impacts Mother Earth daily.
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) under the corrupt and inept leadership of Susan Leal - organized a dog and pony show at the Yerba Buena Arts Center - trying to address Climate Change.

Mayor Gavin Newsom spoke, as he does - lots of Spin and playing to the Media. That same day Alex Tourk confronted him about the Mayor sleeping with his wife and resigned. So, much for honesty and taking care of the City and County of San Francisco.

Climate Change is here and many of us have been addressing the adverse impacts from the early 1960s.

Climate Change has suddenly become popular - because Al Gore the Father of the Internet suddenly chose to fight for the Environment and educated thousands through a film about Global Warming and Climate Change.

That is how American works - the Media. Most of the general public gets their information from the Media and various degrees of hype. Few are educated on issues be it Iraq, International politics, Global Warming, Economics, and of course it goes without saying Climate Change.

Today, the United States and Canada produces the largest amount of Green Gases. China and India are way down the totem pole - but there are forces that would like you to believe it is the other way around.

Closer, to home the SF Public Utilities Commission has a lot of do with its own pollution. Daily, it pollutes the Bay, releases flares by the Phelps Raw Sewage Plant in the middle of a residential area in the Bayview and contributes to the Green Gases that cause Global Warming.

Daily, millions of gallons of clean and waste water are leached into the ground - polluting the watershed. We have 900 miles of sewer pipes and 1900 miles of clean water pipes - most of them are old - over 70 years old and leaking.

SFPUC infrastructure most of it lies along the Coastal Area and is prone to liquefaction and of course the tides that will become a reality as a result of Global Warming. In a few years 3 to 4 feet tidal waves will become a reality. The infrastructure will be adversely impacted and millions will be prone to hardship - health and safety problems.

I attended the Climate Workshop as an observer - we could not ask a question. Most White folks did the talking and the hoopla:
