"Utopia is on the horizon; I walk two steps, it takes two steps
back. I walk ten steps, and it is ten steps further away. What is
Utopia for? It is for this, for walking."
~Eduardo Galeano, Uruguayan journalist

It is only when we remind ourselves that it is
the journey and not the destination that makes
the trip worthwhile that we stop asking
"Are we there yet?" And start exclaiming,
"Wow! What an incredible
journey this is turning out
to be!"

May you never miss the beautiful scenery
along your own personal path to Utopia.

Vigil for animals on the 15th, as the Year of the Dog ends...UCSF sued again

Dear Animal Advocates, Companions, Lovers, Liberators and Vigilers!

The next vigil on behalf of animals incarcerated and exploited in laboratory experiments at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) will be held on the third Thursday of the month (as usual) - February 15, 4:30 PM (till about 6 PM). This will be the last vigil of the Year of the Dog (Chinese Calendar); the Year of the Boar (or Pig) begins on February 18.

The vigil will be held at UCSF's Parnassus Campus at 513 Parnassus Avenue in San Francisco. (Please see information on public transportation to UCSF below.)

UCSF sued again: Once again I have sued UCSF because of the university's delinquency in answering several records requests I had made pursuant to the California Public Records Act. Corey Evans, attorney at law, filed suit on my behalf just today, Friday, February 9, 2007. On the one hand, I feel lucky that I have acquired the services of Mr. Evans, a gentleman (in the truest sense of the word) and successful lawyer. Yet on the other hand, it is a shame that I have had to go to such ends to acquire information that I am entitled to by law. In any case, we will be attempting to acquire a variety of UCSF documents, including information on research that UCSF has contracted with the US Department of Defense to conduct, research protocols involving dogs at the university, medical records for dogs used in a cardiology research project, and UCSF's Annual Report of Research Facility for 2006. Corey Evans feels we have a good case, and success is likely; thus we may have these important documents by early spring. Time will tell.

Note Regarding Public Transportation: If you would like to take public transportation to UCSF, the San Francisco Muni buses #6 and #43 both go right by the vigil's venue on Parnassus Avenue; also you can take the N-Judah streetcar, get off at Carl & Arguello streets, and take the elevator (going up) within the UCSF facility to get to Parnassus Avenue. If you are coming from the East Bay, you can take BART, get off at any stop between Embarcadero and Civic Center in San Francisco, and then take an N-Judah streetcar going outbound (and follow directions above regarding N-Judah streetcar).

And please remember to be kind to yourself, as well as other animals. Hope to see you at the vigil - take care!

Dear Friends of the Environment and Dance!

Now here is a great reason to get together next week:

An evening of excellent music (live and DJ'd) great food and great community (to rally around a great cause): All on the occasion of an auspicious birthday!

Julia Butterfly Hill’s birthday bash fundraiser for Circle of Life:

Lydia’s Organics, Groove Garden and three great local acts have banded together to throw a fundraiser for what we believe to be very worthy cause – especially in this time of heightened environmental awareness. That cause is Circle of Life:

Based in Oakland, Circle of Life was founded to promote the sustainability, restoration and preservation of life. It is a stand for peace, justice and environmental sustainability; and in that space, it creates powerful events and meaningful opportunities for people and organizations to make a difference in the world we share.

All talent involved, bands and artists alike, are donating time and creativity to Circle of life. Lydia's Organics has underwritten the entire cost of the event. Circle of Life will receive 100% of the door!!

So in the spirit of The Groove Garden come join us for an outstandingly good time - - and we'll see you on the dancefloor!

The evening commences with a community dinner featuring the excellent culinary forays of food pioneer and respected chef, Lydia Kindheart

Copwatch will hold a meeting on Monday, February 19th at 8pm in the Grassroots House, 2022 Blake St. in Berkeley.
On February 9th, an Alameda County judge ruling against the City of Berkeley's Police Review Commission essentially banned open hearings about police officers and blocked public access to records of police misconduct. Berkeley Copwatch says, "The community must come together and take action against this blow to public safety and police accountability!"

Fourth Annual Masked Mardi Gras Party at Town Hall Tuesday, February 20,
Town Hall 342 Howard St, SF CA http://www.townhallsf.com/
For more information or to purchase tickets, visit http://www.TheAList.org

Guests are encouraged to don masquerade masks for this New Orleans' style party. A percentage of proceeds from the evening will go to a fund for Town Hall’s own Hector Sahagun, a bartender who was in a tragic head on taxicab collision on January 4, 2007 after leaving work.

The evening will be a raucous, roving feast, encouraging guests to roam about the restaurant to sample traditional New Orleans’ style foods prepared by Executive Chef/Owners Mitchell and Steven Rosenthal:

• a shellfish boil strewn over newspaper covered tables;
• a raw bar with oysters, crab and shrimp;
• a gumbo and jambalaya station;
• fried chicken;
• jalapeño corn bread;
• beer, wine and Pat O’Brien’s style Hurricanes, a cocktail synonymous with Mardi Gras.

Beads and doubloons will festoon the restaurant, and the feet tapping sounds of a New Orleans Dixie band will play throughout the night.

PURCHASE TICKETS at: http://www.TheAList.org
$65 per person.
TheAList.org has a limited number of tickets available for $57.99.

CAROL QUEEN SPEAKS AT ONETASTE
Words that Talk to the Clit and the Cock: Erotic Writing and Why it Matters
Sex writing can be sublime, thought-provoking, raunchy, or ridiculous. It can feed stereotypes or bust them; it can be a power for sex-positive growth, a visceral way to connect your head with your body, a way to jump-start fantasy or a way to escape your own identity completely. Noted erotic author and memoirist Carol Queen will share her perspectives on written porn and erotic literature, and will include plenty of snippets of her work by way of example, and maybe inspiration.

discovery channel airs program on CHEMTRAILS Th Feb 22 9pm ET/PT

The new time for the Discovery Channel's BEST EVIDENCE presentation of the program "Chemical Contrails" is now Thursday, February 22, 2007, at 9:00 p.m. They will show it again early Friday morning, February 23, at 1:00 a.m.

If they are allowed to show it (It was supposed to have been shown on Feb. 8, but never happened), this will be the first time the chemtrail issue has been addressed on mainstream TV. I understand that the program does have some substance. Would you share this information with your readers.

Heads Up everyone, (FYI)

Chemtrail Spraying investigation about to air on the Discovery Channel.

Watch the Discovery Channel program "Chemical Contrails", Feb. 8, 2007

Check your local listing for time of airing.

I have been told by sources close to the making of this film that it
will not be the usual blasé put down of the Chemtrail Spraying issue but
a fair look at the subject without any preconceived bias.

Quote: the Best Evidence combines dramatic documentary storytelling with
today's technology and advances in science to unravel and test both
long-held and recent mysteries. We go to any limits — using science
rather than loose conjecture — to make definitive points leading us to
the very Best Evidence. Get a preview of the upcoming episodes.

http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/best-evidence/episode/episode.html

Episode 3: Chemical Contrails

Across the planet, millions of people have seen them — jet aircraft
vapor trails lingering in the sky. Are these just regular "contrails" —
the carbon and water vapor exhaust from commercial planes — or are they
potentially toxic "chemical trails" emitted intentionally as part of
secret geo-engineering experiments or weather-weaponization tests?
Experts and passionate observers on both sides present their best
evidence — from video and photographs, satellite imagery, soil samples
and military evidence. We shed light on a subject that has many people
looking up for answers to disturbing questions. A team of technicians at
an independent laboratory will examine the samples to finally get to the
heart of the question: What is in those fuel emissions and what causes
them to linger for hours and link up with one another like a ghostly
blanket that seems to affect the weather and perhaps our health?
Premiere: Feb. 8, 2007

HELP SAVE THE BEAUTIFUL AND HISTORIC UC BERKELEY
EXTENSION CAMPUS AT 55 LAGUNA STREET SF FROM THE WRECKING BALL

Free film screening and public forum on February 24 at SF Public
Library Koret Auditorium. 55 Grove St @ Market / 8th / Hyde / Larkin

Eliza Heminway's documentary film "Closing the Books" and a public
forum
will be held February 24th for to help save the 5.8
acre historic UC Berkeley Extension campus from the wrecking ball and
make sure this historic treasure paid for with our tax dollars remains
in public use. UC Regents have engaged a private developer, AF
Evans, to
convert this historic site into high density
condo and retail space in the name of profit. Their proposal is
currently under review by the SF Planning Department. UC Regents are
seeking to rezone the campus, which if approved, will permanently end
its 150 year history of public use. A public hearing is scheduled for
March 8th at the San Francisco Planning Commission; it is the only
public process planned
regarding the re-zoning of the campus. Film Screening and Public
Forum
to be held:

WHEN: Saturday, February 24, 4:15 - 5:30 PM, Free

WHERE: The San Francisco Public Library, 100 Larkin St. (at Grove),
Koret Auditorium, located on the library's lower level. Enter at 30
Grove St. and proceed down stairs. Special needs parking is
available on
Larkin
and Fulton Streets.

NOTE: This program is sponsored by the Friends of 1800, Save the UCBE
Laguna Street Campus and Trinity Productions, and is not a San
Francisco Library Sponsored program. Contact (415) 563-7336 for
additional information.

The program will begin with a screening of Eliza Hemenway's new
documentary UNCOMMON KNOWLEDGE: Closing the Books at UC Berkeley
Extension, a poetic journey inside UC Berkeley Extension as plans
unfold to close its historic San Francisco campus and convert it into
a lucrative private development. Filmmaker Eliza Hemenway worked at
the campus for over six years. Wondering why UC Regents were closing a
campus with a 150 year history of public use, she picked up her camera
and began to film. The result is a revealing look into higher
education and culture, as well as a hauntingly beautiful portrait of a
campus and the community it served. Accompanied by an edgy urban
soundtrack written and performed by locally acclaimed musician Tim
Barsky and Everyday Theatre with additional music by The Toids.
The film screening will be followed by a brief Q&A with the filmmaker
and a public forum.

PUBLIC FORUM:
A panel will present information on the historic and planning issues
related to the reuse of the Campus. The panel will include: Charles
Chase, AIA, Executive Director, San Francisco Architectural Heritage;
Mark Paez, Urban Planner and Co-Chair, Friends of 1800; Warren Dewar,
Attorney and Board Member, Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association
(HVNA); and Tamara Colby, Urban Planner and Co-Chair, Save the UCBE
Laguna Street Campus.

A Public Hearing on the Draft EIR will be held Thursday, March 8, 2007
in Room 400, City Hall. Call 558-6422 the week of the hearing for a
recorded message for the exact time of hearing. A request has been
made to hold the hearing at 6:00 PM. Again, this is the only public
process planned regarding the re-zoning of the campus.

Save the UCBE Laguna Street Campus was founded to establish a Citizens
Advisory Committee to determine the highest and best use of the campus
and to promote the preservation of its historic and public resources.
The group has drafted a petition calling for the Board of Supervisors
to establish a Citizens Advisory Committee. See:
http://www.petitiononline.com/UCBEsite/petition.html and

Legacy of Torture:
The War Against The Black Liberation Movement

The same people who tried to kill me in 1973 are the same people who are here today, trying to destroy me. I mean it literally. I mean there were people from the forces of the San Francisco Police Department who participated in harassment, torture and my interrogation in 1973 ... none of these people have ever been brought to trial. None of these people have ever been charged with anything. None of these people have ever been questioned about that. -- John Bowman, former Black Panther

In 2005 several former members of the Black Panther were held in contempt and jailed for refusing to testify before a San Francisco Grand Jury investigating a police shooting that took place in 1971. The government alleged that Black radical groups were involved in the 34-year old case in which two men armed with shotguns attacked the Ingleside Police Station resulting in the death of a police sergeant and the injuring of a civilian clerk.

In 1973, thirteen alleged "Black militants" were arrested in New Orleans, purportedly in connection with the San Francisco events. Some of them were tortured for several days by law enforcement authorities, in striking similarity to the horrors visited upon detainees in Guantánamo and Abu Ghraib.

In 1975, a Federal Court in San Francisco threw out all of the evidence obtained in New Orleans.

The two lead San Francisco Police Department investigators from over 30 years ago, along with FBI agents, have re-opened the case. Rather than submit to proceedings they felt were abusive of the law and the Constitution, five men chose to stand in contempt of court and were sent to jail. They were released when the Grand Jury term expired, but have been told by prosecutors that "it isn't over yet."

For more information on their case, visit http://www.cdhrsupport.org

BunnyJam07 is coming up, Saturday April 7th.
It's going to be at the Porn Palace space in SF (mission, near the metreon parking garage).
Great space, that looks really nice inside. Castle Room, Barnyard, Retro Bar Room, Jail Room, and more.
The theme is going to be: "The Hare-Itics Ball : Ye Ole Bunny Jamme" Hop with it.
We really need some fresh bunny art so it's not just the same stuff recycled from last year.
We have alot of small (as in up to 5x5 feet) spaces spread around the venue that we'd love to fill with bunny art. This is where you come in to play. Do you have an idea for an art installation, interactive art piece, performance art piece, or anything really, that you would like to bring to bunny jam?
If so, send me a message or email me at sfaaron26 [at] yahoo.com
We also need general volunteers for set up and running the party, but that doesn't take as much advanced planning.
