Cultural Peña of La Raza
Centro Aztlán Chicomoztoc Celebrates 7 Years of Existence

Sunday, February 4, 2007, from 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Centro Aztlán Chicomoztoc, 520 So. 2nd Street in San José, California

The Barrio Defense Committee, a community-based organization, proudly invites the community to the Cultural Peña of La Raza, Sunday, February 4, 2007 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 p.m. at the Centro Aztlán Chicomoztoc, 520 So. 2nd Street (between Reed and William) in San Jose, Calif. The Barrio Defense Committee is celebrating the Centro Aztlán Chicomoztoc’s 7 years existence in the community. The Centro Aztlán Chicomoztoc is one of the Barrio Defense Committee’s campaign and that is: to build and maintain an independent community-based organizing center for la Raza.

Maintaining a community-based organizing center that responds to the necessities and injustices against the community is truly a victory for la Raza. Institutions such as these have seldom lasted since the Chicano Movement of the 1960’s. The Chicano Movement left a legacy of pride and strength within our community. It also left a legacy that if we build our own institutions based on our own needs then we can advance in a more positive manner.

During the past 7 years the Centro Aztlán Chicomoztoc housed the community to organize in defense of workers who were exploited by bosses and landlords. The community organized against the abuse and killings of the San Jose Police Department. The community has continuously organized in defense of prisoners. There were many forums on “knowing your rights”, history and culture. English classes for workers have been continuous since the opening of the Centro Aztlán Chicomoztoc.

The Cultural Peña of La Raza serves to promote Raza culture and identity and to learn and obtain information on the issues of la Raza (indigenous peoples of this land) as well as other peoples. The Cultural Peña of La Raza also serves as a fundraiser for the Centro Aztlán Chicomoztoc. On February 4, 2007, the Cultural Peña of La Raza will begin with a silkscreen hands-on workshop, so bring your t-shirt and design. There will be a Mexicah ceremony as well as fundraising events, drumming, food, birthday cake and refreshments.

The Centro Aztlan Chicomoztoc is under the leadership of the Barrio Defense Committee. The Barrio Defense Committee is a community-based organization that defends the democratic rights of la Raza and constantly builds for Raza self-determination.
