Dellums inaugural

by Oakland voter
Lobbyist Ron Dellums has gotten off to a shaky start as Mayor. His staff only recently found out he had to be sworn in by the first monday of January. Since that was a holiday, he was sworn in last friday, then took a few more days off! He didn't show for work on Tuesday Jan. 2 and has been pretty much invisible since elected in June.
from Oakland Tribune:
Dellums sworn in quickly and quietly
OAKLAND — Ronald Dellums quietly became the 48th mayor of Oakland at a hastily scheduled ceremony Friday, officials said Tuesday. The City Charter requires a newly elected mayor to be sworn in by 11 a.m. on the first Monday of January. This year, that fell on New Year's Day.

Dellums, 71, will be formally inaugurated Jan. 8 — the first nonholiday Monday of the month — at the Paramount Theatre, kicking off a weeklong celebration.

A schedule of inauguration events:
Monday, Jan. 8

-11 a.m., Swearing-In Ceremony, Paramount Theatre, 2025 Broadway, open to the public, despite limited seating.
-5 p.m., Sponsors Appreciation Reception, Scott's Restaurant, 2 Broadway, by invitation only.
-8 p.m., Inaugural Gala Reception, Scott's Restaurant, Tickets: $150, $75 for city employees, $35 for students and seniors.

Tuesday, Jan. 9
-11:30 a.m., All Chambers Business Luncheon for the Mayor,
Oakland Marriott City Center, 1001 Broadway, Tickets: $75,

Why was Dellums's staff unaware of the time frame for swearing in?
How can Dellums take time off and then expect City Employees to pay $75 to attend a reception?

I am sorry I voted for him and have no expectations that he'll be any better than Jerry Brown.

I'll bet that Mayor Dellums' pay did not kick in until 2007, and that his time off was his own. As far as being invisible since June of last year - he wasn't in office yet! He has certainly been visible this week. I would encourage you to attend some of the free public events surrounding his inauguration such as Hands Around The Lake this Saturday morning. His public addresses have been very inspiring. They almost make me want to leave SF for Oakland.
