Oakland CA -- A year ago December 10, a tragic scene unfolded at Oakland's Tribune Tower as hundreds gathered to watch Mary Jesus plunge to a bloody death.

There were no tickets sold for this event. No ticket takers, no ushers, no charge.

This was street theater of the damned, and everyone was welcome to watch the final curtain close, on the life and times of Mary Jesus.

OAKLAND — After scattering hundreds of copies of her suicide note from the seventh-floor ledge of a downtown building, Mary Jesus held her nose and raised an arm in the air.

Then, like a swimmer taking a plunge, she leapt to her death.

"Goodbye cruel world and all that," said the note, which blamed her suicide on an eviction she had battled fiercely — and unsuccessfully. "Everyone will say what they always say when something totally preventable isn't prevented, 'Why didn't anybody do anything?' "

The Oakland Fire Department will hold a public memorial Monday for a woman who jumped to her death from the landmark Tribune building last month. Mary Jesus Brazil, 33, died after leaping from the building in downtown Oakland at about 1:50 p.m. Dec. 10. Before jumping, she tossed copies of a suicide note to a crowd at 13th and Franklin streets.
