Against Breast Cancer: Topless Men and Women Fund Raise on Sproul in the Rain.

Today, November 2, 2006, a group wearing nothing above the waist but name tags covering their nipples danced, sang and jumped around Sproul Plaza at Sather Gate calling out for donations in support of Breast Cancer Research. Adding comment to their convictions' strength, the semi-nude outreach crew endured a cold rain to make their point and collect their funds.

This reporter asked whether they had considered promoting prevention rather than breast cancer research. One of the outreachers advised that in fact, a portion of the funds would go to direct services screening for low income women "in a very cost effective way."

The group claimed to be unable to identify by name the organization for which they were campaigning. (This reporter has heard that prevention is much more effective than treatments, and the cancer research industry as a whole is often criticized.)

All health power to the people.

The hiding of nipples in the event sends the wrong message. So does hiding the people's faces. If they or you don't wish to be identified with this project, what does that tell others?

Good that both women and men were involved.

You're absolutely right, Doctor.

However, people do have their own safety concerns. The 4-5 women (and really, one man) were unabashed about being in public,
in person. Being posted to the internet has other considerations.

The stickers were kind of funny and made them stand out more, actually. They may have been worried about being
arrested or not reaching people as much as they could, not because of their own feelings but because of the horrible conservativism
that has engulfed the country. When I asked one woman of color what the group felt about being on IMC, she said she couldn't do
that. Thus, the images without her and covering eyes.

One day it will be natural again to be nude as a part of an everyday life. Sorry if my treatment of the topic could have been better.

Interesting that the same photo looks so different in the printed version. Wider and grayscale but higher definition.

(As for the privacy issue, these two were fine with giving their names to the paper. I applaud these demonstrators.
I hope they used the funds well to make a difference.)
