Sustainability Tour
Saturday, Ocotber 14, 2006 Bus leaves from SFBG at 9:00 am
Meeting at the SF Botanical Garden at 9:00 am, we will travel first by bio-diesel bus to the gardens of Florence and Dave Strange. Members of the California Rare Fruit Growers Association, the Stranges will show us a unique garden growing amazing exotic fruits and vegetables using all natural methods. Aside from the mature plantings and orchards, we will explore the greenhouse and marvel at an array of exotic fruits from bananas to cherimoyas.
In addition, we will be visiting Golden Nectar Farms in Windsor, amid the rolling hills of Sonoma County. Golden Nectar is a 2 ½ acre all-organic paradise growing over 100 varieties of fruit, a myriad of culinary and medicinal herbs, veggies, and ornamentals. It features an outdoor cob kitchen, and a lovely straw bale, mushroom-shaped building with a living roof.
The farm was started by John and Ana Stayton as a model of ecologically- minded local agriculture. Stayton co-founded and teaches the Green MBA program in Sustainable Enterprise at New College of California in Santa Rosa. This widely acclaimed program has been gathering nationwide attention and is providing the model of sustainability for future businesses. Lunch will be provided using the freshest ingredients grown on the premises or nearby.
If you're interested in the issues of locally grown food, ecology and gardening, and want to explore the dream of a sustainable future, this is the tour for you.
