Bay Area Protests the Right Wing Chain of Life
On Sunday, October 1st, right-wingers from the religious "right" were in San Francisco to hold a "life chain" event. Apparently, every year on the first Sunday in October (alternate date: October 29th), Life Chain invites the churches in each city and town across North America to stand on a local sidewalk and pray for one hour, while holding signs that include approved pro-life messages. Its organizers believe that participation in these events is "a serious first step to pro-life wactivism." In San Francisco, the life chain was on Park Presidio Blvd. from 2:00pm to 3:30pm. BACORR and others were present to support the "No on 85" campaign and to counter "the message of religious extremism for all." "Life Chain" events were held in cities such as Sacramento, Auburn, Citrus Heights, Grass Valley, and Lincoln on Sunday, October 1, 2006, and on Sunday, October 8, 2006 in Davis (Details). Events were also planned for Antioch, Auburn, and in two locations in San Jose (Full list). They plan to form a "nationwide chain" bearing signs with a message of intolerance for women and their rights as individuals. Pro-choice activists say, "All women- even young women who can't vote- deserve the right to have a say in a decision that will impact them for the remainder of their lives." Read more
