Rally in Sacramento for a Clean Klamath on October 25

Here's some recommendations for saving the Klamath riparian ecosystem (includes salmon, sturgeon, lamprey, etc..) as found on the Klamath Restoration Council website;

"1. Join the email list or volunteer for the Klamath Restoration Council, and respond to alerts.

2. Host a movie showing, or distribute “The Black Oak” and other outreach materials.

3. Write to local newspapers, magazines or radio stations and ask them to report on the Klamath dams.

6. Get on the Klamath dams action alert and information list through KRC.

7. Tell friends and family who use Pacific Power to join their Green Energy Program and request that Pacific Power replace the Klamath Dams with real green energy alternatives.

8. Give a tax-deductible donation to the Klamath Restoration Council.

9. Fight harmful energy bills that sacrifice the environment for corporations, and reduce you consumption of power and water at home and work, switch to green energy, (wind or solar).

10. Contact a group that supports dam removal and lend your skills. Some contacts are the Klamath Restoration Council, the Klamath Salmon Media Collaborative, the Karuk Tribes Department of Nature Resources, or the Klamath Riverkeeper. The above comments highlight the corporate induced media perception of the possible outcomes of Klamath dam removal. This is a false arguement, removal of the lower four Klamath dams does NOT mean we'll give up technology. In fact, renewable energy sources could help improve technology to consume less overall energy. The net gain to the electricity grid from operation of lower four Klamath dams provided far less energy than the gross energy gain to grid promised by Pacificorp PR media reps. Federal subsidies are collected by Pacificorp chairperson (now billionaire Warren Buffet, CEO) to pay for operating the outdated lower Klamath dams. The net energy is the energy remaining following a deduction from gross energy required from elsewhere to maintain the dam's mechanism, turbines, etc..

Just like Enron's promises of future energy gains, the uncertaintly principle plays a role in Pacificorp's desire to bribe FERC into pushing people along the Klamath River to accept the intrusions of the lower four dams for the next fifty years. Part of the people's burden from Enron's involvement in deregulating the California energy market is the outcome of false promises made by Enron's former CEO Ken Lay (not only scapegoat Andrew Fastow). This outcome comes to the people in neatly wrapped energy deals promoted by corporations like Pacificorp as green energy, when the ecological outcome of said projects in disaster, and the net energy gained in negligible if true sustainable energy (rooftop solar cells) was made available to people at their homes (direct access) and communities, with public input and regulation of cost based on usage (ie., large wasteful corporations like Wal-mart pay a higher rate)..

We've never really tried to supplement the 21st century energy needs with windmills, lawn clippings, solar cells, etc.. so how about giving true renewables a chance, Herr GW Bush Futurfascist? Or do the petrochemical/nuclear energy corporate lobbyists have your hands tied to their bulging pockets, fat from taxpayer subsidies for outdated energy programs??

Encouraging production of energy efficient appliances and green energy would prevent energy corporations like Pacificorp from forcing consumers and taxpayers to support the subsidizing of outdated Klamath Dams at the expense of the riparian ecosystem, salmon, sturgeon, indigenous nations (Yurok, Karuk, Hupa, Tolowa, etc..), etc..

Again we're returning to the GW Bush/Cheney regime as a primary culprit in enabling billionaire Pacificorp CEO Warren Buffet easy access to FERC regulators, as FERC under the GW Bush/Cheney regime is considered a rogue element. Since GW Bush hijacked to Office of the US President, FERC has only served the interests of the petrochemical/nuclear energy industries, including the outlandish projects (ie., geothermal drilling of volcanic caldera Medicine Lake) proposed by the regime disguised as green energy, though dependant on petroleum/nuclear for operation (ie., hydrogen fuel from petroleum). We witness the results of GW bush's false promises to indigenous nations of the Klamath River and also fishing industry workers following the Klamath River fish kill of 2002 when 50,000 + salmon died from (C. shasta) gill rot bacteria induced from slower water velocity, higher temps and algae/bacteria blooms..

The 2002 Klamath fish kill was a direct result of the GW Bush regime ordering Sec. of Interior Gale Norton to divert maximum flow out of the Klamath River in the hottest summer months, the lower four dams then further slowing and warming the little amounts of water left..

"The low predicted abundance of Klamath fall-run chinook is due to an outbreak of a lethal parasite (C. Shasta) that has infected and killed massive numbers of salmon in the river beginning in 2002. A second parasite (Parvicapsula minibicornis) has also been found in the river infecting the salmon. California Department of Fish & Game tests last year indicated 80 percent of the outmigrating juveniles were infected; the mortality rate is 100 percent!"

The parasite, which is believed to be natural to the river, has flourished in the Klamath as a result of low flows, warm water, and poor water quality. Flushing flows and high quality, cool water are necessary to rid the infestation in the river (low flows are a result of the drought and low rainfall the basin has suffered until this year, coupled with up-stream agricultural diversions; the poor water quality is attributable to the reservoirs behind the four lower dams on the Klamath where warm, still waters facilitate toxic algal outbreaks and impairment of water quality)."

The greatest outrage is not that which effects fishing industry employees, but that which effects the sovereign indigenous nations of the Klamath River, from the Yurok at the delta, up to the Hupa and the junction of the Trinity and the Klamath, further until the Karuk along the middle to upper Klamath. The forcibly relocated Modoc nation also once depended on the Klamath salmon, though Oklahoma is a bit far to throw a fishing line..

The Klamath River nations, primarily the Yurok, Hupa, and Karuk continue to depend upon the salmon for their cultural, spiritual and physical survival. Salmon returning to the Klamath every year is the peak of a series of religious events, including the World Renewal Ceremony by the Karuk. The religious traditions of salmon's return are still practiced by these indigenous nations today, and remain central to the cohesive identity of their collective cultures..

In addition to spiritual sustainence, the salmon also provide the Klamath River nations with complete nutrients needed by the human body for survival. Perhaps no other food besides salmon is so complete in needed mineral elements nutrients that one could literally live off of salmon. Supplement salmon with sturgeon, acorns (harvested and leached), eel, sea vegetables and other native foods, people along the Klamath were in optimal health, with few changes to the natural riparian ecosystem. However, the same cannot be said of native people's health following US goverment policy of forced relocations and replacement of traditional salmon diet with refined sugars, refined flours, processed foods etc.. that are all destructive to the ecosystem in every possible way and method of preperation. The evidence in the refined processed food diet being unhealthy is seen in higher rates of diabetes in native people..

We recommend that members of the GW bush (doubt he'll ever read it) regime purchase this book entitled "Indigenous People and Diabetes" so they can better understand their contribution to genocide of indigenous north americans by modern day decision making, including the FERC relicensing of the Klamath River dams..

That being said the recent FERC decision, influenced by the GW bush/Cheney regime petro-energy cartel (ie., Pacificorp CEO Buffet), is a recent contribution to the ongoing US government policy of genocide as directed against the indigenous people of this continent. The modern form of genocide being outdated Klamath dams remaining an intrusion to salmon migratory habitat and possible contribution to their extinction/extirpation in the Klamath River ecosystem, and the resulting damage to the culture and health of sovereign Yurok, Hupa, and Karuk nations..
