Environment & Forest DefenseNew Sightings of Endangered California Clapper Rail on Gallinas Creek
California State Status: Endangered United States Federal Status: Endangered County endangered in: San Mateo/ Marin/ Alameda Bioregion: Bay Area Delta Threats to species: * Habitat loss from construction of oil fields * Non-native prdators * Habitat alteration due to industral development According to the California Academy of Sciences, these are the three primary threats to the California clapper rail. This information was retrieved through an internet search for California clapper rail and was copied off of the California Academy of Sciences website, under California species images. The proposed soccer site qualifies as both loss of habitat and habitat alteration due to industrial development, numbers one and three on the top three threats to this species, which is on both federal and state endangered and protected species lists. The video of the California clapper rail was shot on September 25, 2006 between 10 and 11 AM in Santa Venetia, California on Gallinas creek in back of a home on Schmidt Lane. The GPS coordinates for this sighting are 37.53 North, 119.13 West. The endangered California Clapper Rail is under threat from a construction project to build a huge indoor soccer stadium near its prime habitat. City of San Rafael environmental impact studies have been criticized for not being thorough enough in their assessments of the impacts on the rails. Video evidence such as what is presented here is proof that the rails use a much wider area of activity than the developer is willing to acknowledge. This footage was shot on Monday, Sept 25th 2006 on the southern end of Gallinas Creek in Marin County California. For more information please visit GallinasCreek.org
