A letter condemning the Sentinel lack of coverage

by Amelia McDonald (defiant_people [at] yahoo.com)
Damn Sentinel not covering the real news
To whom it may concern,
On September 15th many of our fellow community members participated in a rally as well as a reclamation of our streets in response to the recent immigration raids that took many of our brothers and sisters away. First of all I applaud the Sentinel for originally covering the raids but I question were you guys were when the community decided to act upon the news? Is it no longer news worthy when it is the people creating the news, or does it need to happen to the people for it to be entertaining enough to publish??
Either way I think it is important to spread the word that there are many members of this community who are not just living life after the raids as any other day- many of us will not allow the 107 abducted community members be forgotten. The actions of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency had nothing to do with keeping our community safe, and everything to do with stifling the voice of the people. It is no coincidence that the initiative known as ‘Operation Return To Sender’ got under way in May after millions of people took to the streets demanding Amnesty for all immigrants. ICE is not welcome in our community, we will not be pushed around by the state- and if the state, local legislatures, and local law enforcement will not protect the people the people will protect themselves. I encourage the Sentinel to stand behind the people and continue to report the actions of people in this community.
Join us for a protest against the recent ICE Raids.

You are right on. This is an editorial decision, too. There are reporters willing to follow up on this story, but the editors don't allow it.

It is outrageous that they have not followed up on this story, yet have managed to publish racist, hateful anti-immigrant hate mail on an almost daily basis. They have allowed suspicious hate attack letters and editorials on the Brown Berets -- a small nonprofit, nonviolent grassroots community group -- yet have neglected to write about these community members who were snatched from our midst.

The Sentinel is trying to recoup their losses by putting out a Spanish-language magazine called La Ganga. Please let everyone you know about this trick and encourage them to boycott this publication until The Sentinel changes it's tune. The people are not that stupid.

The sentinel seems to be so random in terms of what gets in. They often write long stories on minutiae, or they are months late on issues of major concern (e.g. the housing situation around here), and they keep printing op-eds by the same community members with muddled thinking. They also have a strong bias towards some homeowners who feel that the world owes them everything, such as no university traffic or neighboring houses occupied by students, even though most other cities in the state have to put up with polluting industries, traffic, and various other harmful externalities. One or two op-eds would be okay to show diversity, but in a town with a university and thousands of educated people, they can't do better than this lady - who really needs a logic course (She is criticizing the 'left' as being conspiracy theorists, and then immediately starts characterizing whole ethnic groups by the traits they supposedly hold - as though they conspire as a group to be that way: http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/archive/2006/September/17/edit/stories/04edit.htm ).

I have thought the same thing. Why are they publishing this outrageous woman? I suppose it is because she presents outrageous, far-fetched claims, thoroughly lacking in any logical basis. (Steven Colbert, eat your heart out.)

She claims to be a historian, but her degree is actually in Literature. This is a very significant misrepresentation. For readers who are unfamiliar with the academic discipline, one must go through rigorous examination of one's thesis by many academics in the field of history before one can be awarded an advanced degree in history. To claim she is a historian though she has never been published in any academic, peer-reviewed journals would essentially be considered fraud in academia. (I did a search and was unable to find any such writings.) I'd rather hear from a marine biologist, biochemist or historian from UCSC. We even have Angela Davis, but have they ever asked her to do an article? Not to my knowledge.
