POWERDOWN
Inspired by Jan Lundberg
http://www.culturechange.org
215-243-3144

If the U.S. continues with its current policies, the next decades will be marked by war, economic collapse, and environmental catastrophe. Resource depletion and population pressures are about to catch up with us, and no one is prepared. The political elites, especially in the U.S., are incapable of dealing with the situation and have in mind a punishing game of “Last One Standing.” The alternative is “Powerdown,” a strategy that will require tremendous effort and economic sacrifice in order to reduce per-capita resource usage in wealthy countries, develop alternative energy sources, distribute resources more equitably, and reduce the human population humanely but systematically over time. While civil society organizations push for a mild version of this, the vast majority of the world’s people are in the dark, not understanding the challenges ahead, nor the options realistically available. This film speaks frankly to these dilemmas. Avoiding cynicism and despair, it begins with an overview of the likely impacts of oil and natural gas depletion and then outlines four options for industrial societies during the next decades: Last One Standing: the path of competition for remaining resources; Powerdown: the path of cooperation, conservation and sharing; Waiting for a Magic Elixir: wishful thinking, false hopes, and denial; Building Lifeboats: the path of community solidarity and preservation. Timely, accessible and eloquent, POWERDOWN is crucial information for our times. This is a film presentation by Richard Heinberg of his own recent book by the same name.

THIS Wednesday "FOOD JUSTICE" free showing
9/20 come catch this 20 min. food flick wednite 8pm, it's fresh and locally grown ;-)

A film showing of "FOOD JUSTICE: A Growing Movement" will occur at
Station 40 (3030b 16th Street) free of charge on wednesday evening
(the 20th of September, 2006), most likely starting at 8pm *do
remember that the movie is only 20 minutes, so come too late and you
WILL miss it, although there'll probably be another good one playing
afterwards*.
Please attend if you would like to see Alemany Farm in action, and its
volunteers smile, and even speak, on camera.

-----
Here's a blurb-y type thing about the movie:

"Martina Brimmer and Zora Tucker set out to tell the story of unequal
access to food in our urban minority communities as a symptom of
environmental racism and classism.

The extraordinary vision of various organizations in west oakland and
san francisco brings to light the spirit of the food justice movement.

Striving to cultivate justice in their neighborhoods and nourish their
communities, groups such as Oakland Based Urban Gardens, People's
Grocery, Mandela's Market and the volunteers of the Alemany Farm are
confronting social, agricultural and environmental issues that affect
us all.

FOOD JUSTICE: A GROWING MOVEMENT was conceptualized in a cafe in
Prescott, Arizona by two strangers, Zora Tucker and Martina Brimmer.
The project was formally Martina's Senior Project, but instantly
became a mutual adventure as Zora quit her job to accompany Martina.
Neither of them had so much as made home-videos, much less attempted
to document an issue which called for articulate exposure.
The two felt that the issues of urban food security and their
relationship to systemic oppression, environmental racism, health
issues and the failure of our conventional food system needed to reach
the public, with primary distribution within the communities that bear
the consequences of social inequity. It was also their intention as
activists to portray the world which they are striving to create, and
so Martina and Zora focused upon several of many Bay Area grassroots
projects that they feel are the food justice movement."

REVISED YLEM Forum info 9/20: "Artists Remember 9/11"
REVISED INFO 9/10/06 • New meeting place • Short description, too

YLEM Forum: “Artists Remember 9/11”
Wednesday, September 20, 8 pm
7:30 pm “mix and meet”
boca (Bar Of Contemporary Art)
414 Jessie Street
(between 5th & Mint, adjacent to the historical Mint building at 5th & Mission,
2.5 blocks from Rx Gallery, YLEM’s usual meeting place.)
San Francisco, CA 94103
1 block from the Powell St. BART station
Street parking, or 5th & Mission Garage

Suggested donation sliding scale $5-10
Open to the public (No one under 21 allowed)

Two artists present explanations for 9/11 at variance with the official 9/11 Commission Report, one sober and factual, the other seriously funny. Also, artists present a proposal for a memorial in Shanksville, PA to Flight #93

PROGRAM

Trudy Myrrh Reagan briefly reminisces about YLEM’s 20th anniversary celebration in 2001 held just days after 9/11, and displays the actual comments that people in attendance wrote on the wall about it in their state of shock.

Trudy Myrrh Reagan is YLEM’s founder.

Chuck Thurston, “Perception, Suggestion and Reality in the Destruction of the World Trade Center Towers - a look at how fear and mass media are combined to create false beliefs in large populations.”

After a brief but riveting overview of overwhelming evidence supporting the controversial explosive-demolition hypothesis of the destruction of the World Trade Center, Thurston will show how it is part of a long and continuing history of “false flag” provocations, ones which have propelled us into many wars.

Thurston is an independent artist and expert on high-end digital printing.

Frank Garvey, “The Real 9/11 Conspiracy - Solved!”

Surrealist Frank Garvey presents yet another 'conspiracy' theory on these events. Garvey believes that they flowed inexorably from the structural decisions of the ruling classes in the U.S., Saudi Arabia and elsewhere. In response to the revolutionary rise of Arab nationalism in the 1960's, these power structures have much in common behind the veils of their respective religions. They decided to siphon off the social discontent of poor masses in the Middle East into supposedly more impotent channels, with the help of very reactionary elements in Islam. Garvey’s theory spins off a whole series of outrageous branches and tentacles which will astound and outrage the most tolerant of attendees, no matter what their ideology, income level or hairstyle.

Frank Garvey has been delighting people with mordant humor and robotic mischief in his OmniCircus Junkyard Cabaret since 1988.

Paula Levine and Susan Schwartzenberg, “Currents: a proposal for a memorial to Flight #93.”

In the fall of 2005, artists Susan Schwartzenberg, Peter Richards and Paula Levine, in collaboration with landscape architect, Tom Leader, designed and submitted a proposal commemorating the crash of United Airlines, Flight #93. The plane originally departed from Newark, New Jersey, and was bound for Los Angeles California when it crashed in an open, nonresidential old mining field just outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The proposal was in response to an international call for submissions to design a commemorative to be located on the site of the plane crash. Currents was designed to counter the tendency of monuments to delimit and flatten history. It aimed to create an active commemorative that would grow and change over time using a design that incorporated a large reclamation project, education and research on site, and a large Global Positioning Satellite network of site embedded narratives that wove throughout the large memorial site.

Schwartzenberg and Levine will talk about this collaboration within a larger context of memorials and history, and explore culture’s current compulsion to memorialize prior to the necessary shift from visceral to collective cultural memory.

Susan Schwartzenberg, a senior artist at the Exploratorium, is a photographer and visual artist. Paula Levine, professor of conceptual and information arts at SFSU, specializes in locative media like uses of GPS and maps.

# How Architects Can Reverse Global Warming (2 HSWs)
Sep 28 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm AIA San Francisco 130 Sutter Street, Suite 600
Ed Mazria, AIA, believes architects must become leaders in the fight against global warming. His recently launched 'Architecture 2030' http://www.architecture2030.org <http://www.aiasf.org/%20http:/www.architecture2030.org> draws a connection between building design and global warming, with research indicating that building design and construction could have a greater effect on reversing global warming than any other industry sector. Considering this research, the AIA Board of Directors released a policy statement calling for a 50% reduction in use of fossil fuels for buildings in four years, with additional reductions leading to eventual carbon-neutrality by 2030. Mazria will present his vision for how to meet these goals.

FireDrums IV
Thursday, September 28th - Sunday, October 1st, 2006

FireDrums is about bringing the global Fire Arts and Drumming Communities together to share knowledge and to propel these burgeoning Art Forms forward. The past 3 FireDrums were blessed with some of the most epic Fire and Drumming Jams of all time with participation from some of the world's most amazing Fire Dancers and Drummers. Truly inspirational!

FireDrums will always be open to everyone at any skill level even if you've never lit-up. Whether you're learning, teaching, sharing, inspiring, or being inspired, we welcome anyone interested in being part of the abundance of advancement that occurs when a convergence of this magnitude transpires. We look forward to revisiting old friendships and creating new ones with those who love the beat of the drums and the warmth and glow of the flame.

Everyone was a beginner at some point in their development and you can often learn just as much from teaching as you can from being taught. There will be organized and impromptu interactive workshops in the various disciplines of the Fire and Flow Arts and Drumming throughout the gathering.

LOCATION: We've secured the beautiful Cutters Scout Reservation exclusively for our next FireDrums gathering. Cutter Scout Reservation is a full-service camping facility located in the coastal mountains of California above Santa Cruz. This breath-taking 300 acre camp ground is located 25 miles from Santa Cruz and 67 miles from San Francisco. Cutter is about 2,200 feet in elevation and it's in some of the last old-growth redwoods on the West Coast. There is a full-size swimming pool, a small lake with canoes, hiking trails, bathrooms & showers with running water, bbq's, and so much more!

Things to bring: Your highest self, fire toys, drums, fuel, fire safety equipment, whatever you need to be happy in the woods, camping gear, tent, food, drinking water, friends & family, flashlight, sun screen, bathing suit, layers for varying temperatures, love & good vibes.

Things not to bring: alcohol, dogs, bad vibes.

As always, this is a LEAVE NO TRACE gathering!

Please car pool as there is very limited parking!

These 2 previous topics are VERY IMPORTANT POINTS!

This is a scout camp located within a beautiful national forest and it's our 1st gathering at this location. It's imperative that we show absolute respect for their beautiful land or we will not be invited back again. We have conveyed to Cutters how wonderful and respectful everyone has been at our past 3 gatherings and that FireDrums is not a rave or party scene.

Total capacity is strictly capped at 600 attendants by the Cutter Ranger!

Advanced Purchase Tickets: $40
*Only the 1st 450 pre-sold tickets are available at this price*
*The last 150 advanced tickets will be $50*

On-Sight (Gate) Tickets: $50
*Only available if FireDrums doesn't sell-out from Advanced Purchase Tickets*

To purchase tickets and for more info, please go to http://www.firedrums.org

Ticket price includes entrance to the gathering, use of all of the features listed above, up to 72 hours of camping, swimming, and lots of fun! By securing the reservation for our exclusive use, we can now put the funds received towards making this an even better experience for everyone at a lower individual cost than past FireDrums gatherings.

# OCTOBER 5: There is a way! There is a day!
http://worldcantwait.net/

Well as some of you might know (maybe all) there is a plan for a "nationwide" protest against
the fascists in power. This is being organized bz WorldCantWait I think Cascadians should
get involved.... this group involves people like Gore Vidal... their idea is to stimulate the
begining of a Colour Revolution like in the Ukraine with its Orange Revolution. I think this is
a means to get the idea of an Evergreen Revolution in the collective thoughts of
Cascadians ... so after the coming November election fraud and mostlikely WorldCantWaits
failure for a full "nationwide" revolution then Cascadians might keep these tools and ideas in
mind for our Evergreen Revolution (using the ideas from the book "From Dictatorship to
Democracy" http://www.hermanos.org/nonviolence/dictodem.html)
