Papal Insults: A Bavarian Provocation

by Tariq Ali (Reposted)
Was Benedict's most recent provocation accidental or deliberate? The Bavarian is a razor-sharp reactionary cleric. A man who organises his own succession to the Papacy with a ruthless purge of potential dissidents and supervises the selection of Cardinals with great care leaves little to chance.

I think he knew what he was saying and why.

Choosing a quote from Manuel II Paleologos, not the most intelligent of the Byzantine rulers, was somewhat disingenuous, especially on the eve of a visit to Turkey. He could have found more effective quotes and closer to home. Perhaps it was his unique tribute to Oriana Fallaci.

Perhaps.

The Muslim world with two of its countries---Iraq and Afghanistan-- directly occupied by Western troops does not need to be reminded of the language of the Crusades. In a neo-liberal world suffering from environmental degradation, poverty, hunger, repression, a 'planet of slums' (in the graphic phrase of Mike Davis), the Pope chooses to insult the founder of a rival faith.

The reaction in the Muslim world was predictable, but depressingly insufficient. Islamic civilization cannot be reduced to the power of the sword. It was the vital bridge between the Ancient world and the European Renaissance. It was the Catholic Church that declared War on Islam in the Iberian Peninsula and Sicily. Mass expulsions, killings, forced conversions and a vicious Inquisition to police the cleansed Europe and the reformist Protestant enemy.

The fury against 'heretics' led to the burning of Cathar villages in Southern France. Jews and Protestants alike were granted refuge by the Ottoman Empire, a refuge they would have been denied had Istanbul remained Constantinople. 'Slaves, obey your human masters. For Christ is the real master you serve' said Paul (Colossians 3: 22-24) in establishing a collaborationist tradition which fell on its knees before wealth and power and which reached its apogee during the Second World War where the leadership of the Church collaborated with fascism and did not speak up against the judeocide or the butchery on the Eastern Front. Islam does not need pacifist lessons from this Church.

§Egypt Catholics Fault Pope
by IOL (reposted)
CAIRO — The deputy patriarch of Egypt's Catholics on Saturday, September16 , attributed Pope Benedict XVI's anti-Islam jibe to his poor knowledge of Islam and Muslims, warning that the "surprising" remarks could play into the hands of extremists.

"Pope Benedict has not dealt enough with Muslims all through his life and does not have enough knowledge about Islam and Muslims," Father Youhana Qalta, told IslamOnline.net Saturday, September16 .

Speaking at the University of Regensburg on Tuesday, Benedict quoted criticism of Islam and Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) by14 th century Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus, who wrote that everything Muhammad brought was evil and inhuman, "such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

"The pontiff's words have surprised the Catholics in Egypt and the whole East, as a point of fact," Qalta said.

§Pope Takes Distances from Islam Quotes
by IOL (reposted)
CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy — Trying to calm Muslim anger, Pope Benedict XVI said on Sunday, September17 , that he was "deeply sorry" for outrage triggered across the Muslim world by controversial quotes in a recent lecture, asserting that the quotes do not reflect his views about Islam.

"I am deeply sorry for the reactions in some countries to a few passages of my address ... which were considered offensive to the sensibility of Muslims," the pontiff said during the traditional Angelus blessing from his summer residence at Castel Gandolfo outside Rome, reported Agence France-Presse (AFP).

He stressed that the passages he quoted during a speech at Regensburg University Tuesday "do not in any way express my personal thought."

Benedict had quoted criticism of Islam and Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) by14 th century Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus, who wrote that everything Muhammad brought was evil and inhuman, "such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

"I hope that this serves to appease hearts and to clarify the true meaning of my address, which in its totality was and is an invitation to frank and sincere dialogue, with great mutual respect," the pope said Sunday.

Vatican's Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone insisted on Saturday, September16 , that the pope's words had been misinterpreted.

§Pope admits to shock and sorrow
by ALJ
Pope Benedict has said he is "deeply sorry" for the angry reaction to his remarks on Islam and that the medieval text which he quoted from about jihad did not reflect his own opinion.

He told pilgrims, standing in heavy rain at his Castelgandolfo summer residence near Rome on Sunday, he was shocked by the reaction to his speech given at the University of Regensburg in Germany on Tuesday.

"I am deeply sorry for the reactions in some countries to a few passages of my address at the University of Regensburg, which were considered offensive to the sensibility of Muslims," he said.

"These in fact were a quotation from a medieval text, which do not in any way express my personal thought. I hope this serves to appease hearts and to clarify the true meaning of my address, which in its totality was and is an invitation to frank and sincere dialogue, with mutual respect."

§Italian nun shot dead in Somalia
by ALJ
An Italian nun has been shot dead in a hospital in the Somalian capital, Mogadishu, witnesses and medical workers say.

Gunmen entered the SOS Hospital in southern Mogadishu's Huriwa district and opened fire on the nun before escaping in the ensuing confusion, witnesses said.

"After serious injuries, she died in the hospital treatment room. She was shot three times in the back," said Dr Ali Mohamed Hassan, a physician at the hospital.

The nun, believed to be in her 70s, was one of the longest-serving foreign members of the Catholic church in Somalia, officials told AFP news agency.

Unconfirmed reports said the nun's bodyguard had also been killed.

Yusuf Mohamed Siad, head of security with the Islamic courts who control Mogadishu, told AP news agency that the group had arrested two people, but did not give further details.

Pope anger

A Vatican spokesman called the killing "a horrible episode" and said it hoped that the incident would be "an isolated fact".

The killing comes as anger has risen among members of the country's popular Islamist movement over comments made by Pope Benedict that were deemed insulting to Islam.

On Friday, a prominent hardline Mogadishu cleric called for Muslims to "hunt down" and kill the pope for his remarks.

"Whoever offends our Prophet Mohammed should be killed on the spot by the nearest Muslim," said Sheikh Abubukar Hassan Malin during Friday prayers.
