to say their ideal family size is three or more children.

" Usually, if contraception is easily available, most parents reproduce at a rate compatible with their economic and personal interests.
For example, in the Third World, uneducated rural peasants usually have more kids than do educated urban folks. When peasant families move to a city, their birth rate eventually drops (at least in the next generation); because kids are a severe economic burden in a city. This normally occurs even when the parents belong to a church which forbids artificial contraception. Among "normal" populations, in the long run, economics usually outbids the Pope.


But ideological extremists may over-ride their own economic interests.


On the right, fanatically reactionary Christians, Jews, and Muslims may have as many babies as they can, intending to "please God";
even if this requires financial hardship.


Such religion-driven reproduction is most obvious among Israeli Jews,
where the fanatic minority out-breed the "secular" majority. Many fanatics refuse to use contraception,
refuse to get adequate secular education,
and even refuse to serve in the military
(tho fanatic Jewish males are "brave" enough to throw stones at women who dress "immodestly",
assassinate politicians,
stab queer freedom-marchers...).
These fascists fanatics cannot out-think the "secular" majority,
but they may eventually breed themselves into a majority.
(If they ever gain power, Israel will decline scientifically and economically.)


Likewise in Utah, Mormons out-breed the non-Mormons.
....


At the opposite end of the ideological scale, on the far left,
some green intellectuals refuse to have any kids at all,
hoping thereby to reduce over-population.
That's a strategic mistake.
By refusing to reproduce,
while fundi-fascists hyper-breed,
such greens deprive the left of much-needed future activists and leaders.
( Full disclosure: Yes, I too am a childless green;
tho my childlessness isn't an ideological choice. ) ]
