Die In at the Ferry Building
On Saturday September 16th, more than 40 Bay Area activists staged a "die-in" at the Ferry Building in San Francisco to highlight US tax $$ used to fund the attacks on and killings of civilians in Palestine, Lebanon and Iraq. The "die-in" was also held to commemorate the anniversary of the 1982 Sabra and Shatila massacre in Lebanon.
There is no Freedom or Democracy in Occupation
1948, 1982, 2006: The Occupation of Palestine and Lebanon Still Exists
What does it mean to be a refugee?
What does it mean to have your homeland taken away from you?
On September 16, 1982 it meant rape, torture and death for over 2,750 people living in the Sabra & Shatila refugee camps in Beirut, Lebanon. The camp was set up in 1949, after Israel forced approximately 711,000 Palestinians to flee their homes the year before, creating the largest refugee population in the world. In 1982, Israel allowed militias to massacre thousands of refugees living in the camps. When will the massacres end?
Today, exactly 24 years later, the Israeli siege on Lebanon and Occupation of Palestine continue. Since 1948, the number of Palestinian refugees has climbed to over 4,600,000. These people have lost their homes, their livelihoods, and their safety.
Freedom and Occupation Cannot Co-Exist.
Today's die-in commemorates the 1982 massacre of Sabra and Shatila by demanding – from Israel, and from the U.S. - an end to war and an end to occupation.
How does this affect me?
As a U.S. tax payer, your hard earned salary funds occupation in the Middle East, sacrificing much needed services here at home.
Annual U.S. Aid to Israel: $3 billion
Entire federal budget for childcare: $5 billion
Spent to date on the occupation of Iraq: $315 billion
Total tax $ spent annualy on U.S. K-12 education: $536 billion
What is being done with our tax dollars?
Instead of paying for much needed services here, our tax dollars fund home demolitions, a common tactic used by the Israeli military to occupy Palestine and Lebanon.
