KPFA DEFENDS BANNING OF
LABOR SHOW PROPOSALS: "Paperwork Overwhelming", by Jordie Mann
Listener-sponsored KPFA’s Program Council took the unusual step of
banning proposals from the KPFA Labor Collective recently, explaining
that the Program Council was uncomfortable with the tone of the
collective and felt the collective needed a “time out”, or mild
punishment, for overwhelming them with paperwork.
The Labor Collective, which has produced numerous shows for
International Women’s Day, May Day, and Labor Day, picketed outside the
station on Labor Day, bewildered by the ban on proposals.
“They only have 20 minutes of regular labor programming right
now,” stated Labor Collective chair Steve Zeltzer. “It’s pathetic.”

What this and other reports conveniently omits is the behavior of the labor collective. no other prospective programmers DISRUPT every meeting they attend, scream, heckle, threaten and abuse everyone in the room. If the Program Council said NO to bullies, I say good for them. Anyone who's attended an LSB meeting and seen their performances there knows exactly what I am talking about. If Ms. Rosenberg said it was because this same group floods them with proposals to the exclusion of others wishing to submit them, she was merely being polite.
While I imagine everyone is sick of this by now, the many comments I have made on the issue are available on Indymedia and elsewhere. There really is no need to make things up. The letter announcing the moratorium cited: "deteriorating relationships with station staff and volunteers" and
"acrimonious behavior towards our other volunteer programmers and our employees".
The Labor Collective has every opportunity to use this time to repair those relationships and figure out ways to interact that will work better when the moratorium period expires. I hope they will do that. It will take more than filling Indymedia pages with half-truths, distortions, and lies.
