Program Council/Management Bans Labor Programming By KPFA Labor Collective
Labor Day Protest to Defend Labor Programming At KFPA
On Labor Day, Monday September 4th, KPFA's Labor Collective will protest the banning of labor program proposals at the station. People will gather at 1pm outside of KPFA's studios, 1929 Martin Luther King Drive at University in Berkeley. The Labor Collective says, "We call all supporters of 'Free Speech Radio' to join the picket line and speak out to protest the banning of labor programming proposals to KPFA."
On March 8th, the KPFA Program Council with the support of management voted to ban labor programming proposals from the KFPA Labor Collective for one year. According to the Labor Collective, the Program Council took this action because of "deteriorating relationships with staff and volunteers" and "ongoing disruption of the unpaid staff structure."
This decision was reportedly reached without a public hearing process. The KPFA Labor Collective has reportedly been producing labor programming at KPFA on Labor Day, May Day, Workers Memorial Day for more than three years. The collective has members from SEIU 1000, NALC 214, SEIU 616, IBT 70, IUOE 39, SEUI UHW, and other locals. It has reportedly gained support for more regular labor programming at KFPA. Hundreds of trade unionists have signed petitions for more regular labor programming and support for a weekly one hour labor show called "Workweek".
The Labor Collective is asking that letters be written in support of it. It will also be urging supporters to attend the KPFA Local Station Board meeting on September 16th at 1:00pm at Freight and Salvage Club, at 1111 Addison/San Pablo to support the removal of the ban. Post about speakout with 10-day plan
