Bay Area Screenings of Documentary About Katrina Animal Rescues
One year after Hurricane Katrina: Are Our Pets Safe?
The San Francisco SPCA and In Defense of Animals have announced the San Francisco screening of a newly-released documentary feature film about animal rescues in New Orleans, which is entitled, "Dark Water Rising: The Truth About Hurricane Katrina Animal Rescues." The 75-minute film was shot by award-winning filmmaker Mike Shiley. The plight of the over 50,000 dogs and cats that were left behind in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is spotlighted, along with the efforts of a small group of rescuers from around the world: "These individuals risked their lives to sledgehammer down doors, brave toxic floodwaters, and dodge corrupt cops in a race against time to rescue up to 10,000 trapped and starving animals."

The film was shown on Monday, August 28th, 2006 at the Roxie Film Center, 3117 16th St in San Francisco. It was also screened at the San Rafael Film Center on Thursday, September 7th. Film Director Mike Shiley makes a personal appearance to introduce the film and answer questions after each screening, and IDA will be tabling at the showings.
