AB450: California version of animal disaster bill needs your support
by In Defense of Animals
Wednesday Aug 9th, 2006 9:45 AM
Late last week, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed its version of the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act.
The landmark legislation will require state and local disaster plans to include provisions for evacuating and sheltering companion animals during large-scale disasters. Thank you to everyone who responded to our Action Alerts and showed these lawmakers that there is strong support for protecting animals among U.S. voters.

Now a state bill to help California's animals in the event of a disaster needs your support. Speaker pro Tem Leland Yee (D-San Francisco/Daly City) has introduced AB 450, a bill that would require state and local agencies to implement a standardized emergency management system (SEMS) that considers animals following a major disaster or emergency. "In California, we have the ever-present threat of fire, flood and earthquake," said Yee. "It is important that we consider animals in our disaster planning as they play a critical role in our lives and our economy."

Please take action (http://ga0.org/campaign/SupportAB450) to send members of the California Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Kevin Murray - Chair of the Committee - and Senate President pro Tem Don Perata a message to let them know that you strongly support AB 450, which will provide for the safety of animals in emergencies. Then write, call or fax them to follow-up.

Also be sure to tell a friend about this issue.
