Be Courageous in the Month of August
In August, the Legislature will be voting on nine bills sponsored by Equality California that
will dramatically improve the quality of life for lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender (LGBT)
Californians.
All this month we will be asking you and all of our allies to be courageous and take a stand for
equality by writing and calling the governor to urge him to sign these bills into law.

As part of our 12 Months of Equality series, this month's theme is courage.
Courageous acts have defined key moments of the LGBT Civil Rights Movement. Whether depicting
lesbian scenes on a Provincetown stage in 1922, running for public office as a gay man in 1961,
standing up to a police raid in 1969 New York or issuing marriage licenses in 2004, these
courageous actions have changed how we talk and think about ourselves and how Americans see the
LGBT community.
This month, we feature Senator Sheila Keuhl, author of SB 1437, the Bias-Free Curriculum Act,
writing about her perspective on courage
(http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?ID=M718605885700688332273965).
Also, EQCA Legislative Advocate Alice Kessler updates us about the status of EQCA's pending
legislation (http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?ID=M718605895700688332273965).
Finally, we compiled a list of some of the most courageous moments in the LGBT civil rights
movement (http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?ID=M718605905700688332273965) .
I hope you will take a moment to read these materials and reflect on what courage means
to you.
Together, with courage, we will forge ahead.
Warmly,
Geoff Kors
