Hundreds Protest U.S. Aid to Israel in Front of Senator Feinstein's San Francisco Office

Following are a few photos of yesterday's event.

In full view of downtown afternoon rush hour commuters and financial district high rise offices, hundreds of protesters gathered in front of Senator Dianne Feinstein's office in San Francisco yesterday to demand that the U.S. pressure Israel to a ceasefire from its current war in Lebanon.

Likely few if any of the protesters expect Dianne Feinstein do anything productive even as news of more and more atrocities committed by Israel in Lebanon come to light.

Instead, the majority of protesters appeared intent on expressing their sorrow for Middle Eastern war victims; to express their anger and disillusion with politicians who profess peace but abet war; to publicize opinions that get very little notice in the mainstream media; and to encourage others to work for peace.

Following are a few photos I took of the gathering.

Dissident journalist Henry Norr's career at the San Francisco Chronicle soon ended after he joined thousands in the streets to protest the start of Bush's War in Iraq-- a war we all know was based on lies. Dianne Feinstein supported the war and largely supports the occupation of Iraq today.

Says Todd in a recent e-mail:

"Sen. Feinstein occupies the center of California politics. It is difficult to distinguish her, for instance, from Gov. Schwarzenegger, which is why he is considering endorsing her. She supports the occupation of Iraq, stands 100% with the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, and helped President Bush pass
the USA Patriot Act (twice). She opposes gay marriage, a living wage, national health care and supports President Bush’s immigration proposals, which millions of Californians rejected on May 1 by marching in the streets. No doubt her money and her
fame will bring her many votes, but, as I’ve always said, if this race turns into a referendum on the war in Iraq and voters looking to express their solidarity with immigrant workers vote for me, then this race could
get very interesting."

A small group of "supporters" of Israel (I put that in parentheses because I believe this war is harming Israel too) protest from one street corner. The main anti-war protest takes up three other intersection corners.

Looking up from the street, Dianne Feinstein's building looks as mute and inscrutable as her representation. Does she listen? Does she care?

Postcript: A View I Can Agree With

As an American it is painful to view the interminable and ugly conflicts in the Middle East and to realize that our government today is poorly positioned to alleviate the suffering there... indeed it adds to the suffering by sending money and bombs there.

Here is an excellent essay to ponder:

Feinstein opposes medical marijuana

I know this does not compare to the US/Israel genocide machine, but Feinstein opposed Prop 215, our medical marijuana initiatve, which passed with 80% of the vote in San Francisco, and also passed in such conservative counties as Orange and San Diego because the medical doctors support it. The question we must also ask: Why does anybody vote for her? Why did San Francisco give her 72% of the vote in 2000 and only 10% of Medea Benjamin, Green Party candidate for US Senate? The answer can only be because we have not had enough precinct walkers for the peace party candidates of the Green Party and Peace & Freedom Party, passing out information on all of Feinstein's terrible positions. All campaigns are decided in the precincts and the more precincts that are walked for the peace parties, the sooner we will replace Feinstein with either a Green or Peace & Freedom Party candidate. That is what is needed from now until November, and the sooner, the better.
