PLANNED PARENTHOOD IN MOTION
An Online Newsletter
July 2006
Message from Cecile Richards, President
Planned Parenthood Federation of America
Over the past couple of weeks, anti-abortion protesters in
Mississippi have been making national headlines. The target of
their venom? The last remaining abortion clinic in the state.
They want to shut it down for good -- this in a place where
access to abortion is already drastically restricted. The
protesters were a constant spectacle in the city of Jackson,
holding offensive signs and screaming at anyone entering the
clinic. They picketed the local newspaper and the police
department. They burned a copy of the Quran, and tried to
destroy a gay-rights rainbow flag. They displayed a fetus
preserved in formaldehyde in a public park.
To the Planned Parenthood family, sadly, this kind of behavior
is nothing new. In fact, Planned Parenthood has a special
security group devoted entirely to protecting staff and patients
from anti-choice terror tactics. These tactics include hundreds
of incidents of harassment and violence directed at our
patients, staff, and clinics. Bomb scares, death threats,
vandalism -- these are a daily reality as we provide affordable
birth control, cancer screenings, tests for HIV and other
sexually transmitted infections, and, as a last resort, abortion
services.
The great irony behind the actions of these extremists is that
they make it more difficult for Planned Parenthood to provide
the services that prevent unintended pregnancy and reduce the
need for abortion -- services that we provide to more than 90
percent of our clients. I'd bet that in a single Saturday
morning of doling out information and birth control at our
clinics, we do more than any anti-choice group has ever done to
reduce the number of abortions in this country.

An "Institute" of Ideology
The so-called Medical Institute for Sexual Health (MISH)
recently made headlines after the federal government announced

Despite what its legitimate-sounding name might suggest, MISH is
really nothing more than a thinly veiled ideological interest
group that manipulates science to advance its mission ...

New Report on Crisis Pregnancy Centers
This week, a congressional report proved that anti-choice
"crisis pregnancy centers" have received $30 million of our tax
dollars to tell patients that, among other things, suicide,
breast cancer, and infertility are much more likely to occur
following an abortion.
Thanks to this investigation by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), we
know exactly what they're telling women, because female
investigators called, saying they were pregnant, and recorded
their conversations.
