Lt. Gov. Candidate Proposes Prison Population Reduction

Stewart Alexander, the Peace and Freedom Party Candidate for California Lieutenant Governor, wants to reduce California’s prison population below 100 thousand inmates. Alexander says, “Californians can save the billions of dollars that Governor Schwarzenegger promised but failed to deliver.”

California’s prison population is dangerously over crowded, with more than 70 thousand above the maximum limits. The over crowded conditions are creating security concerns, poor housing for inmates, and is violating state and federal guidelines.

Governor Schwarzenegger has sought to build more prisons; however Alexander says building more prisons is not the answer, and taxing Californians billions of dollars does not make good fiscal sense.

Recently a federal watchdog overseeing California prisons accused the Schwarzenegger administration for not taking action to deal with California’s prison crisis. California has the nation’s largest prison population.

Alexander is proposing to remove ten’s of thousands of inmates out of the over crowded institutions, and to locate these inmates into the homes of their relatives. These prisoners would have tracking devices, none with sexual offences and not convicted of a crime involving violent behavior.

Alexander is also proposing the closure of one or more prisons within the next two to three years to cut the cost to taxpayers.

Since Schwarzenegger was elected in 2003 the over crowded conditions in the state prisons and courts have gotten increasing worst. The governor seems to be without a plan for a prison and court system that has reached a crisis point.
