SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco County Transportation Authority (SFCTA), in conjunction with Caltrans, Muni, Department of Parking and Traffic, Department of Public Works and the Mayor’s Office of Greening, is developing a Transportation Plan for the 19th Avenue/Park Presidio corridor from Lake Avenue to Junipero Serra Boulevard.

The corridor is designated as a State Highway (Highway 1) that is owned and operated by Caltrans. It is a six-lane highway serving both regional and local traffic. The study area spans 7.5 miles with approximately 78,000 vehicles using it per day, giving it one of the heaviest traffic loads of any residential street in San Francisco. Because of its current auto-focused design, it divides neighborhoods like the Richmond and Sunset in half since it is challenging and intimidating to cross for pedestrians and cyclists alike.

Residents who live near the corridor feel threatened by the dense, fast moving traffic but see its potential and have worked together to design street improvements. Sunset-Parkside Education Action Network (SPEAK) worked with urban design students from UC Berkeley to create a plan for the Sunset part of the corridor. Their plan calls for curb bulbouts and landscaping at intersections, lighting, landscaping and artwork on the median and an increased buffer zone at the sidewalk. In the Richmond District, the Park Presidio Neighbors group has sketched out similar safety and beautification improvements for Park Presidio Blvd, 14th Avenue and Funston Avenue.

SFCTA’s Senior Engineering Project Manager, Ian Moore expects the Plan “to outline, in one document, all the improvement projects that Caltrans, Muni, DPT and DPW have scheduled for this corridor, such as improved traffic signal visibility to motorists, installation of pedestrian countdown timers and short-term transit access improvements. The Plan will focus on short-term pedestrian, transit and landscaping projects that can be constructed by City agencies with available Proposition K and federal funding.”

The project sponsors are hosting the first round of community meetings on June 28th and 29th where the agencies will present a progress report on the corridor’s upcoming transportation improvements, followed by a facilitated public discussion. They hope that many residents and corridor users come to the interactive community meetings to share their ideas and concerns.
