This summer thousands of students and many of us regular folk will be going to New Orleans and other parts of the Gulf to join grassroots campaigns for the Right of people displaced by the hurricanes to return to their homes. Well be working on house gutting, construction/reconstruction and political organizing to ensure the right of people to housing and levees that will protect them from future storms. This summer is being called Reconstruction Summer by People's Hurricane Relief Fund (PHRF), an African-American grassroots organization on the ground in New Orleans. The idea is that like Freedom Summer in 1964, folks who go to the Gulf as part of Reconstruction Summer, will not only provide a needed hand. They will also gain experiential knowledge that will inspire their commitment to the struggle for justice for Hurricane Survivors, for racial and economic justice in their own cities, and will ultimately build a stronger social justice movement.
THIS SUMMER WILL BE HISTORIC!
