And that is what makes them so effective at lighting sofas and beds. Nonsmokers don't set their beds and sofas on fire. So if PBDE's really are a problem, we can count it as another yet another harmful effect of smoking. That is another theory as to the Arab pilot connection to the Sept 11th. I have to wonder if there is another connection here. That drug running was funding another covert operation that has connections to all the shit that is happening. In the cocaine CIA situation I would say "follow the trail" or "keep you nose on this story" but then it would sound like bad puns. The mission of the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade, which was launched in 1992, is to raise funds and awareness for access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer, with a focus on the medically underserved. Funds raised by the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade are awarded to five areas of the breast cancer cause: screening, diagnosis, treatment, support services and scientific research, including prevention and therapeutic vaccine studies. Beneficiaries range from leading cancer centers to community-based non-profit breast health programs. Among the beneficiaries funded by the Avon Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity, are more than 200 investigators at ten leading academic research centers nationwide, more than 600 community-based breast health programs, plus education and advocacy training programs. More than half of the funded scientific investigators are women and minorities. The Avon-funded researchers are seeking the possible cause, prevention, treatment and cure for breast cancer, focusing on a broad array of targets. No Avon funds are directly awarded to breast cancer research involving animals. Our guidelines apply only to studies funded by the Avon Foundation, and do not impact other research underway at these same institutions or by these same researchers. Much progressive research is undertaken at a cellular level, with human tissue, or through other research modalities that do not require the use of animals, and these are the studies to which we direct our funds. We are confident that this policy does not impede the scientific progress to eradicate breast cancer. In 1989, Avon Products Inc. became the first major cosmetics company to end the use of animal testing for products and we continue to support the development of alternative testing methods. Establishing a similar policy for research funded by the Avon Foundation was a natural extension of this commitment. I got my *brand new* laptop fully heisted right out from under my nose. Literally, i was chillin witha good friend in the back corner of a hallway/cafe, and aside from him, the only other human in the vicinity was a kind girl sitting at the table next to us. I had my laptop sitting on my luggage, charginge against the wall. After 15 minutes i got up to leave, and that sleak answer to all my problems was absolutely GONE. The manager there says it happens a lot, and a friend of my mother recently had her's gaffled from a coffee shop in SF> I cannot express how unbelievably inconvienient it is to loose all this work and time, and unreleased music...so i wanted to toss out that wake-up call. i'd heard some stories before, but always thought i'd never be stupid enough to leave my laptop unattneded. But these cats are GOOD. i never saw him come in, and the girl next to us said he was dressed in a biz suit and only there for 30 seconds, and she didnt see him touch the laptop, but ...he did. Please join us! Activists hope to reach Daley Plaza at by 3:30 p.m. for a brief rally before beginning the March at 4:00 p.m. (Route details below). Northern California 9-11 Truth Alliance has sent 400 posters, Gary Franchi plans on turning 200 of them into picket signs. We have a sound system, chant sheets, whistles, lots of Deception Dollars, and handouts for the good people and press of Chicago. We hope that the local peace and justice groups will join us and support the efforts to stop the cover-up, expose the lies about 9/11 which have been used to launch illegal wars, attack our Constitution, Bill of Rights, and sell Homeland Security, an endless bogus war on terrorism. Any "Impeachment," or "Don't Believe the Corporate Lies" signs would fit in well with the theme of our march and conference which is to challenge the official myths that support the War Paradigm and to promote the truths and policies which support People and Peace. Bring the kids, babies, musical instruments, your own message, songs, sense of humor, courage, outrage, energy to let Chicago, the world know that we aren't going to let the press, corporations, and government get away with the lies and their dark agenda. We demand and will create a better world for all. Rally at Daley Plaza 3:30 p.m. and then walk north up Dearborn to Randolph heading east, to State St. continuing north, stopping at the ABC news new street studios located across the street from the Chicago Theatre ( http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=stationinfo&id=4053703 ) then on to NBC / Chicago Tribune / WGN Plaza, just north of the Chicago River. We will stop at each studio and stand in front of their windows, holding our signs and raising awareness. It is very important to stay on the side walk and not block any exits or entrances to the buildings in the area. We will let the media know who we are and what we stand for. Admission: $5 (FREE for members of SPJ and Media Alliance) --- The last year has seen dramatic shifts in Bay Area media ownership. MediaNews, the new owner of the San Jose Mercury News and Contra Costa Times, will soon control nearly two-thirds of local daily newspaper circulation; the two largest weekly newspaper chains, Village Voice and New Times, merged; and there's been an escalating scramble by several large media companies to control the expanding market for ethnic and foreign-language readers. Can journalism survive in an era of corporate mergers and acquisitions? What about public service and community needs? What can be done in response to these trends to strengthen the quality of our news media workplaces? Hear from journalists and media reformers who are responding creatively to the evolving media landscape. Panelists: -- LINDA FOLEY, president of The Newspaper Guild, a union representing newspaper workers nationwide. Prior to the sale of the Mercury News and Contra Costa Times, the Guild advanced an ambitious plan to transfer it and other former Knight Ridder papers to a "worker friendly" company. -- TIM REDMOND, editor of the San Francisco Bay Guardian. The Guardian says it has lost hundreds of thousands of dollars due to unfair competition for ads since the two competing alt-weekly chains merged. How can the little guy compete when the "alternative" press is corporate controlled? -- STEPHEN BUEL, editor of the East Bay Express. New owner Village Voice Media is the Guardian's corporate nemesis. As a reporter Buel once covered consolidation. -- SANDY CLOSE, founder and director of New America Media, plus an additional panelist to be announced, will address the effects of consolidation in ethnic and foreign-language media. Moderator: -- ERNA SMITH, professor of journalism, San Francisco State University. You may have seen the ads. They depict tragic scenarios -- mouths clogged with peanut butter, cookies with nowhere to be dipped - truly, we are warned of the horrors awaiting those with an inadequate dairy beverage supply. Out here in the real world, though, there are more pressing issues. There are questions that might need answers: Who will take care of your kids if you can't? How can you protect the people you love? If you can't speak for yourself, who will - and will they care what you think about it? CSC is proud to present Estate Planning for Everyone, a seminar designed to answer these and other questions about guardianship, wills, trusts, Advance Health Care Directives and more. Event Website: http://www.booksmith.com http://upcoming.org/event/81794 # The Endangered Endangered Species Act Thursday, June 8 7:30-9 pm Free For over 30 years the Endangered Species Act has been our nation's safety net for fish, wildlife, and plants on the brink of extinction. But in 2005 the U.S. House of Representatives voted to gut the protective provisions of the statute, and several bills to eviscerate the Endangered Species Act are being proposed in the U.S. Senate. If these bills become law the natural world is likely to become greatly impoverished, and as one of the top biodiversity hotspots in the country the San Francisco Bay Area has much to loose in the process. Join Brent Plater, Bay Area Director for the Center for Biological Diversity, as he describes the strength and importance of the Endangered Species Act and how current legislation will weaken the law, defines where real improvements in the Endangered Species Act can be made, and explains what you can do to ensure that protections for endangered species remain strong. Brent Plater works on a variety of endangered species and wildlands protection issues throughout the country. He has been the lead attorney on several cases brought by the Center, including cases to protect the southern resident killer whale, the North American green sturgeon, the unarmored threespine stickleback, the California red- legged frog and dozens of wild and scenic rivers in the Great Lakes region. Brent is a graduate of the University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment, the University of California, Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law, and Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.
