About five hundred queer youths marched on the capitol today, staging a rally to demand their rights and speak out against homophobia.
The main purpose of the rally was to pass AB606, which would force teachers to halt harassment in public schools against LGBT members. Also on the agenda was the prevention of AB 1326, which would prohibit the "promotion of homosexuality" in public schools, according to supporters, but would in reality silence all discussion of LGBT issues in classrooms.
Later in the day, the youths entered the capitol building and spoke to lawmakers about the bill, and their own personal experiences with homophobia.
A small group of counterprotesters stood a hundred or so yards away from the rally, attempting to dominate the media with their message of hate and intolerance with signs like "Stop spreading AIDS," "Stop Gay Marriage" and, hilariously, "Stop Fagets." Fortunately, their presence was marginal, and their attempts to disrupt the rally failed miserably.
