Subject: FW: Upcoming Meetings

Greetings Fellow Writers, I hope everyone is finding a few moments to write a couple of sentences every now and then in preparation for April's "Cinco Minutos with You" event. Plans are also underway to put together our first anthology--more details on that after I present a proposal to the officers of the Society.

It's time to take out your calendars to "Save The Date" for our upcoming monthly meetings:

February 13--P.C. McKinnon, poet and author of "If Only Yet The Fog" will speak to us on the beauty and magic of poetry. Mr. McKinnon is also working on a second collection of his poetry, entitled "Dance of the Phantom Spirit."

March 13--Christine Granados. Christine's first book, Brides and Sinners in El Chuco, will be released on February 16. Christine has been hailed as one of the rising Latina voices in literature, and she will be on a panel discussion under the same title at the 2006 Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) Conference and Book Fair in Austin.

April 10--Cinco Minutos with You. Come and hear exciting works-in-progress by our very own members! We will also continue the tradition of handing out the limited edition Fiesta Medal issued by my favorite college!

May 8--Laura Esquivel. THIS MEETING WILL BEGIN AT 7 P.M. Laura Esquivel is the award winning author of "Like Water for Chocolate" which has sold more than four and a half million copies around the world in 35 languages. She has also written "The Law of Love" and "Between Two Fires."

June 12--Diana Gonzales Bertrand, a San Antonio award-winning author who is much in demand by national literary and educational organizations. Ms. Diane Gonzales Bertrand was selected as a National Hispanic Scholar in 1991 and has been recognized as an outstanding educator and advocate for literacy by the San Antonio Youth Literacy Council and the Upward Bound Program. Ms. Gonzales Bertrand is currently the Writer-in-Residence at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio where she teaches creative writing and English composition. She is a nationally recognized writer of novels, picture books and poetry.

I hope everyone finds time in their busy schedules to attend one, if not ALL, these events! Remember, our meetings are held at the Barnes and Noble (San Pedro Crossing) and begin at 7:30 p.m., except where previously noted. As always, our meetings are free and are open to anyone with a love for writing!

Also, Ruben has asked me to pass on the following information regarding the "Chica Lit Club Fiesta" being held in Miami:

Join us for a fabulous event May 19 - 21, 2006!
The Chica Lit Club Fiesta is the first and only mainstream chick lit event aimed at modern Latinas in the United States. The fabulous Wyndham Miami Beach Hotel and Resort plays host for the three-day event.

The fiesta will feature all the excitement of a literary conference, plus the fun of being in one of the world's most beautiful cities. The event will include panels, readings, and book-signings with your favorite Chica lit authors; group brunches and dinners with inspiring Latina celebrity and author keynote speakers; pampering, beaches, shopping and nightclubs; there will also be a book fair sponsored by Books & Books of Miami.

Come make new friends – those who love reading about their US and Latina cultures as much as you do – and meet some of the luminaries in the vibrant new US fiction genre, Chica lit!

Can’t wait to see you on the beach, chicas!

For aspiring writers: Would you like to attend the Chica Lit Club Fiesta for free? Submit a 500-word essay on the topic "When I First Realized I Was a Sucia," using the meaning of the word found in the Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez novel, "The Dirty Girls Social Club," as well as a paragraph outlining why you think you are a writer.

Send all materials as an attachment to:
alisa [at] dirtygirlsproductions.com
In the subject line, write Chica Lit Club Fiesta Essay

All entries must be in by March 31, 2006. Be sure to include a short biography and contact information with your submission. The winner will have all expenses paid to the Chica Lit Club Fiesta 2006, including airfare. The winner will also be asked to read her work out loud at one of the brunch gatherings. Buena suerte, chicas!
