On Thursday, February 2, 2006, the anniversary of the signing of the treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in 1858, GENTE UNIDA, BORDER ANGELS and dozens of other human rights organizations as well as thousands of individuals kicked off the MARCH FOR MIGRANTS. The march will travel from San Diego to Washington D.C., with a stop in Sacramento on Monday, February 6th.

The March for Migrants will lobby Congress and state legislators to VOTE NO! on issues such as HR 4437 which calls for continued militarization of the border, as well as the criminalization of migrants and anyone who assists them in any way. The March also demands justice for Guillermo Martinez Rodriguez (assassinated by the Border Patrol in San Diego on 12/30/05), and will pay homage to the 4000 migrants that have died since the inception of the failed Operation Gatekeeper in 1994 (4000 crosses will be planted during march across America in their honor), and hear the voices of our community across the country as marchers and supporters hear the realities of respective migrant and immigrant communities.

"Basta al racismo y la injusticia" (“We’ve had enough racism and injustice”) states Enrique Morones of Border Angles and Gente Unida, "its time our community march on Washington and across the country to let the world know that we demand to be treated with respect and dignity; we ask for nothing more, and will settle for nothing less"

For more information, to join march, or to donate, call Enrique Morones (619) 269-7865, visit http://www.borderangels.org or e-mail: migrantmarch [at] yahoo.com. We are all volunteers and your support is greatly appreciated! Donations to Border Angels are tax deductible.
