US, EU Won’t Recognize Gov’t Including Hamas

by IOL (reposted)
The United States and the European Union have assured Israel they will not recognize any Palestinian government in which Hamas participates, amidst reports that the Bush administration was financially and otherwise helping Fatah against the resistance group in this week’s legislative election.
American envoys who visited Israel about 10 days ago told Israeli officials that recognizing such a government would violate American law, Israel's Haaretz daily reported on Monday, January23 , citing knowledgeable Israeli government sources.

Israel has also received similar messages from Javier Solana, the European Union's top foreign policy official, and Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos, who visited Israel last week, the sources added.

The US, the EU and the Quartet Committee for Mideast peace have recently joined forces against Hamas’s participation in the parliamentary elections, the first in ten years.

The US House of Representatives approved on December 16 a resolution threatening the Palestinian Authority that it risked losing US financial aid and other support if it allowed Hamas to contest the polls.

Solana said two days later that if Hamas won the elections, it would be "very difficult that help and the money that goes to ... the Palestinian Authority will continue to flow."

Joining the chorus, the Quartet stressed that any future Palestinian government should not include members of groups "not committed to Israel's right to exist," a veiled reference to Hamas.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's mainstream Fatah is widely expected to lose ground to Hamas in the election, scheduled for Wednesday, January25 .

Experts say Hamas, making its first bid for parliamentary seats, has been riding a wave of popularity among Palestinians because of its corruption-free reputation, extensive charity network and resistance against the Israeli occupation.

The US and Israel fear Hamas could make a strong enough showing against dominant Fatah to win cabinet seats.

Popular Barghuti

In a related development, Israel's Yediot Aharonoth revealed on Monday that the Bush administration had pressed Israel into allowing jailed popular Fatah leader Marwan Al-Barghuti to do interviews with the two main Arabic news channels, Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya.

Palestinian sources told the Israeli daily that US officials who visited the territories earlier in the month had promised Abbas to enable Barghuti’s interviews, seizing on the charisma and soaring popularity of the detained Fatah leader, seen by many as the father of Al-Aqsa Intifada.

They blamed Abbas for the anemic Fatah campaign against rising Hamas with opinion polls showing a heated race between both, according to the sources.

Barghuti’s overwhelming popularity made it impossible to have anyone but him at the top of the overall Fatah list, even above Prime Minister Ahmad Qurei.

Despite his detention, the West Bank Fatah leader served a reminder of his enduring political clout by winning 96 percent of the vote in primaries held in November to choose Fatah candidates.

In his Sunday's interviews, Barghuti called for all parties to join a broad coalition after the ballot.

Dressed in a drab brown prison uniform, Barghouthi,46 , urged Palestinians not to focus on whether Fatah defeats Hamas.

"We should not think that the aim of25 th of January is the seats. There is an upcoming aim we should be prepared for: A broad national reform government with the participation of all."

Barghouthi, tipped as a possible successor to Abbas, urged Israel to end its military rule of the West Bank, where Palestinians seek to build a state in land Israel occupied in the 1967 war.

"I urge the Israeli people to realize that there is no future for this occupation. This occupation is a burden. They should get rid of this burden," said Barghouthi, serving five life sentences in Israel.

The Palestinian MP considers his trial in Israeli courts illegal.

Gulf Money

Yediot Aharonoth has further disclosed that US officials had promised Abbas that they would put pressure on Gulf countries to contribute money to his campaign.

The Israeli paper claimed that Fatah has so far raised dozens of millions of dollars from Gulf states in support of its election campaign.

The Washington Post and the New York Times reported on Sunday, January22 , that the US Agency for International Development (USAID) was involved in sponsoring the Fatah election drive.

The two American dailies said that the Bush administration has spent almost $ 2million in a bid to bolster Fatah against Hamas.

The Times cited US and Palestinians officials, who asked not to be identified, as saying the program, which began in August, was aimed at helping defeat Hamas.

The Post first reported that the USAID was spending about $ 2million to finance projects ranging from tree planting to street cleaning and providing computers for community centers.

The projects were coordinated with Abbas and were meant to be associated with him and the PA, the newspaper said.

IslamOnline.net revealed in December that the USAID had sent a message to Palestinian MP Nabil Amr, saying it was ready to finance his and other lawmakers' electoral campaigns on condition of maintaining their position against Hamas.

The candidate for Hamas is the very model of bourgeois respectability as he drives from his downtown offices to his hilltop home in a suburb outside Bethlehem.

The dapper and bearded Anwer Zaboun, 37, is widely expected to be elected on Wednesday, so much so that he took a break from the campaign to set out the Hamas position on suicide bombs and its continuing war of resistance against Israel. Hamas, he said, had condemned the London bombings, and pointed to seismic changes in the organisation as it found itself at a crossroads between political engagement and armed resistance to Israel. Steering his old car between potholes, donkeys and careening drivers, Mr Zaboun reminisced about his days at Keele University in Staffordshire, where he earned a masters degree in physics, between stretches in an Israeli jail. Regrettably, he said, he had not been able to return to complete his doctoral thesis because Israel's security concerns meant he could not get a travel permit.

As we entered his small villa, Mr Zaboun noticed that posters for Reform and Change, the proxy party under which Hamas is campaigning, had been shredded. "Perhaps some kids from the neighbourhood tore them. I'm sure they didn't know what they were doing," he said

There are no minders, nor any sign of Hamas's vocation for violent resistance. This is an election that has been fought with virtually no intimidation between the parties. Even with Hamas on the brink of a political breakthrough which could put it ahead of the ruling Fatah, Mr Zaboun had the relaxed air of a university lecturer describing the political earthquake taking place in Palestinian politics.

With 48 hours to go before polling in the first Palestinian parliamentary elections in a decade, Hamas is on a roll. The armed faction long committed to destroying Israel is virtually certain to send shock waves through the Middle East by securing a major influence in the very institutions it has opposed for nearly a decade.

The prospect has triggered an urgent appraisal in Western capitals and Israel over handling the political power that the organisation they have long proscribed as "terrorist" is likely to wield in Palestinian politics from the end of this week.

The dilemma is partly over whether Hamas's probable success is a menacing new threat in an already unstable region, or the first stage of a conversion to the ballot box by the Islamic faction which has been responsible for the largest proportion of Israeli deaths in suicide bombings in the past five years.

Hamas's electoral momentum has been evident way beyond its natural stronghold of Gaza. It was tangible for example, from the moment its members and supporters swept to victory in the West Bank city of Nablus on an anti-corruption ticket in the town council elections on 15 December. Everybody who was anybody in the town turned out to congratulate the new mayor, Adli Yaish, a local car-parts dealer. He is prominent in several of the Islamic charities which go a long way to making up for the lack of an effective Palestinian welfare state and on which Hamas has built much of its popular reputation for fair dealing.

True, outside the trade union theatre where his victory reception was held, they were selling DVDs portraying the Hamas "martyrs" to the conflict with Israel to the accompaniment of martial music. But inside, as local community leaders from headmasters to a posse of Christian clergy queued up to embrace Mr Yaish, the green campaign buttons and banners had not a vestige of this. Party organisers handed out baklava to those arriving, as Yasser Mansour, the number seven candidate on the faction's national list, expertly worked the room to exploit the victory.

"In the name of God, the results are not strange," Mr Mansour told visitors. "We can attribute them to two things - corruption [in the Palestinian Authority] and the security chaos that the Palestinian people have been suffering for 10 years."

BRAVO to the United States and the European Union for refusing to deal with the lunatics in hamas and for understanding that it's insane to build a state next to israel run by people who have sworn to destroy israel (and might someday TEMPORARILY PRETEND to not want to massacre israel anymore just because it helps their public relations for a while)

by Instead of blind "rah..rah..rah.."
Instead of blind "rah..rah..rah.." This just makes you look extremely ignorant.

Speaking of "lunatics" who have gone on to become leaders of countries like Israel - that enlightened western democracy, surrounded by "backward and bloodthirsty" Arabs - here is an excerpt, fittingly, from Hamas' own web site describing the humane act of the King David Hotel Massacre.

"THE KING DAVID HOTEL MASSACRE (22 July 1946)

The leading perpetrators went on to become Prime Ministers

The King David Hotel explosion of July 22, 1946, which resulted in the deaths of 92 Britons, Arabs and Jews, and in the wounding of 58, was not just an "extremist act" of "Jewish extremists," but a premeditated massacre conducted by the Irgun in agreement with the highest Jewish political authorities in Palestine, the Jewish Agency and its head David Ben-Gurion.

According to Yitshaq Ben-Ami, a Palestinian Jew who spent 30 years in exile after the establishment of Israel investigating the crimes of the “ruthless clique heading the international Zionist movement,”

“The Irgun had conceived a plan for the King David attack early in 1946, but the green light was given only on July first. According to Dr. Sneh, the operation was personally approved by Ben-Gurion, from his self-exile in Europe. Sadeh, the operations officer of the Haganah, and Giddy Paglin, the head of the Irgun operation under Menachem Begin agreed that thirty-five minutes advance notice would give the British time enough to evacuate the wing, without enabling them to disarm the explosion.” (Yitshaq Ben-Ami, Years of Wrath, Days of Glory (New York: Speller, 1982), p. 377.)

The Jewish Agency's motive was to destroy all evidence the British had gathered proving that the terrorist crime waves in Palestine were not merely the actions of "fringe" groups such as the Irgun and Stern Gang, but were committed in collusion with the Haganah and Palmach groups and under the direction of the highest political body of the Zionist establishment itself, namely the Jewish Agency.

That so many innocent civilian lives were lost in the King David Hotel massacre is a normal part of the pattern in the history of Zionist outrages: A criminal act is committed, allegedly by an isolated group, but actually under the direct authorization of the highest Zionist authorities, whether of the Jewish Agency during the Palestine Mandate or of the Government thereafter.

The following is a statement made in the House of Commons by then British Prime Minister Clement Attlee:

On July 22, 1946, one of the most dastardly and cowardly crimes in recorded history took place. We refer to the blowing up of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem.

Ninety-two persons lost their lives in that stealthy attack, and 45 were injured, among whom there were many high officials, junior officers and office personnel, both men and women. The King David Hotel was used as an office housing the Secretariat of the Palestine Government and British Army Headquarters. The attack was made on 22 July at about 12 o'clock noon when offices are usually in full swing. The attackers, disguised as milkmen, carried the explosives in milk containers, placed them in the basement of the Hotel and ran away.

The Chief Secretary for the Government of Palestine, Sir John Shaw, declared in a broadcast: "As head of the Secretariat, the majority of the dead and wounded were my own staff, many of whom I have known personally for eleven years. They are more than official colleagues. British, Arabs, Jews, Greeks, Armenians; senior officers, police, my orderly, my chauffeur, messengers, guards, men and women, - young and old - they were my friends.

"No man could wish to be served by a more industrious, loyal and honest group of ordinary decent people. Their only crime was their devoted, unselfish and impartial service to Palestine and its people. For this they have been rewarded by cold-blooded mass murder."

Although members of the Irgun Z'vai Leumi took responsibility for this crime, yet they also made it public later that they obtained the consent and approval of the Haganah Command, and it follows, that of the Jewish Agency.(War Office Document 2611562, Public Record Office, London.)

The King David Hotel massacre shocked the conscience of the civilized world. On July 23, 1946, Anthony Eden, leader of the then British opposition Conservative Party, posed a question in the House of Commons to Prime Minister Atlee of the Labor Party, asking "the Prime Minister whether he has any statement to make on the bomb outrage at the British Headquarters in Jerusalem." The Prime Minister responded:

Hon. Members will have learned with horror of the brutal and murderous crime committed yesterday in Jerusalem. Of all the outrages which have occurred in Palestine, and they have been many and horrible in the last few months, this is the worst. By this insane act of terrorism 93 innocent people have been killed or are missing in the ruins. The latest figures of casualties are 41 dead, 52 missing and 53 injured. I have no further information at present beyond what is contained in the following official report received from Jerusalem:

"It appears that, after exploding a small bomb in the street, presumably as a diversionary measure - this did virtually no damage - a lorry drove up to the tradesmen's entrance of the King David Hotel and the occupants, after holding up the staff at pistol point, entered the kitchen premises carrying a number of milk cans. At some stage of the proceedings, they shot and seriously wounded a British soldier who attempted to interfere with them. All available information so far is to the effect that they were Jews. Somewhere in the basement of the hotel they planted bombs which went off shortly afterwards. They appear to have made good their escape.

Every effort is being made to identify and arrest the perpetrators of this outrage. The work of rescue in the debris, which was immediately organized, still continues. The next-of-kin of casualties are being notified by telegram as soon as accurate information is available. The House will wish to express their profound sympathy with the relatives of the killed and with those injured in this dastardly outrage." (Hansard, House of Commons Debates, volume 425, pp. 1877-1878.)

This was to protest the Soviet policy of restricting emigration to Israel. Killed in the fire was Hurok's 27-year-old secretary (also Jewish). Thirteen others were injured. One participant, Sheldon Siegel, confessed to police that he had made the bomb, and provided the names of the others involved in the crime. Several years later Kahane acknowledged JDL responsibility for the crime. However, the case against the JDL members who were charged in the incident was eventually dismissed on a technicality. (R. Friedman, The False Prophet, pp. 142-145.; The Jewish Defense League: A Cult of Racism and Terror, and a Threat to Arab-Americans, ADC Issues [report] No. 9, published by the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, Washington, DC (1982?).)

a US federal court found Meir Kahane guilty of violating terms of a probation stemming from his 1971 felony conviction for manufacturing firebombs. He had been forbidden from having anything to do with bombs, dynamite or other weapons, or encouraging violence. Citing incriminating letters written by Kahane in which he had urged followers to assassinate Russian and Arab diplomats, the judge sentenced the rabbi to one year imprisonment. Kahane served eight months of this term in a Manhattan halfway house, which he was allowed to leave every day to eat in kosher restaurants. The group called Dr. Kerr an "Arab sympathizer" and said the Camp David summit is "a waste of time." The car sustained approximately $700 damage.

Nov. 24, 1978
UNITED STATES. The Egyptian consulate was firebombed, shattering the wood and glass door. The Jewish Defense League claimed responsibility.

Dec. 6, 1978
UNITED STATES. A group calling itself "The New Jewish Defense League" claimed responsibility for destroying an Egyptian diplomat's car with a firebomb. It was the third attack on property owned by Egyptian diplomats in New York City in six weeks, all apparently protesting the peace treaty being negotiated between Israel and Egypt.

Dec. 12, 1978
UNITED STATES. The New Jewish Defense League doused with gasoline and set on fire the Coney Island home of Farouk Mansour, vice-consul of Egypt's U.N. mission. The next-door home of an elderly Jewish couple was heavily damaged.

December 9, 1979
about a hundred individuals wearing helmets attacked the 14th national conference of GRECE (Groupe d'études et de recherches sur la civilisation européenne, "Group for the Study and Research of European Civilization"). Wrecking the book stands, they displayed banners bearing the name "Organisation juive de défense" (OJD, "Jewish Defense Organization"). Fifteen or so of the conference attendees were injured. One of them lost an eye. Several of the assailants were arrested by the police, and then released that same afternoon on the intervention of Jean-Pierre Pierre-Bloch, the son of Jean Pierre-Bloch and a friend of Jacques Chirac [currently President of France]. Jean-Pierre Pierre-Bloch had been involved, and would also later be involved, in other attacks and intercessions on behalf of these same attackers.

Jan. 13, 1980
UNITED STATES. Three people were injured in an explosion at the mid- Manhattan offices of the Soviet airline Aeroflot. An anonymous caller, identifying himself as a member of the militant Jewish Defense League, told news agencies that the group had "planted the bomb at Aeroflot" to protest the imprisonment of Soviet dissidents. A few minutes later, a man identifying himself as a member of Omega 7, an anti-Castro group, also claimed responsibility.

September 19, 1980
a commando group of the "Jewish Defense Organization" (OJD) attacked sympathizers of Marc Fredriksen, an executive of FANE ("Fédération d'action nationale et européenne," or "National and European Action Federation"), at the Paris Palace of Justice (court house). Six persons were injured, two of them seriously. The Palace of Justice guards, although charged with maintaining order, permitted the Jewish militants in this case, as in all other similar circumstances, to act without or almost without hindrance.

October 3, 1980
an attack against the Paris synagogue in the rue Copernic, which resulted in four dead and 27 wounded, received enormous international media coverage. The four dead were passersby, among them an Israeli woman whose presence has never been explained.
On the same evening as the synagogue attack, the FANE headquarters were wrecked and the Librairie française bookstore on the rue de l'Abbé-Grégoire street in Paris was the target of a new arson attempt. This bookstore, owned by Jean-Gilles Malliarakis, would undergo more than ten attacks or attempts over a period of just a few years. The headquarters of a small political party, l'Oeuvre française, directed by Pierre Sidos was machine-gunned. Lynching scenes unfolded in Paris, as groups of Jewish demonstrators attacked lone young passersby who were singled out because they were tall, blond, and with short hair (Le Monde, Oct. 9, 1980, p. 12).

October 7, 1980
Charles Bousquet, 84 years old, was attacked in his home in Neuilly with sulfuric acid by a group of unknown men who had apparently mistaken him for the militant nationalist, Pierre Bousquet (no relation to René Bousquet). He was hospitalized for a month at Foch Hospital in the major burns ward, and suffered after-effects from his injuries. He refused to press charges because his son Pierre, a professor of history at the University of Paris IV, has asked him not to "on account of the Israelites." He said: "They'll be in Jerusalem or Tel Aviv, the ones who did it. It would all be useless. I want to forget it"

October 12, 1980
Mark Fredriksen was beaten up and admitted to the Rambouillet hospital in serious condition. His apartment was torn apart in his absence. While under treatment at Berck-sur-Mer for multiple fractures, he came close to suffering another attack: three young men showed up and asked to see him; their description matched that of the Aziza team that subsequently attacked Michel Caignat with acid.

October 20, 1980
the writer André Figuéras was attacked at his residence.

November 5, 1980
an arson attack destroyed the office, warehouse and printing plant in Sussex, southern England, of the firm that prints Did Six Million Really Die? and other revisionist publications of the Historical Review Press. Damage was estimated at 50,000 pounds. A leftist journalist, Manny Carpel, was found guilty of the crime, and sentenced to two and a half years imprisonment. (He served only a little more than a year.)

JDL bombs the San Francisco branch of Melli, an Iranian bank.

Jan. 26, 1981
UNITED STATES. San Francisco, California. A bomb exploded at an Iranian bank in San Francisco, shattering windows and damaging the wall of the building where the explosive was planted. No injuries were reported at the Bank Melli Iran and no arrests were made. A caller from the the Jewish Defense League claimed credit for the attack, stating that it was in protest for "the persecution of Iranian Jewry." Later a man called the media claiming that the "American Revenge Committee," formed to take revenge against Iran for the treatment of the former hostages, was responsible. The caller claimed the group would continue bombing Iranian targets and threatened to kill Khomeini supporters. FBI investigators took the threats seriously because the caller gave "certain authenticators" indicating intimate knowledge of the bombing.

January 29, 1981
Michel (Miguel) Caignet, a 26-year-old Sorbonne student who was preparing for a doctorate in Anglo-German linguistics, had just left his residence in Courbevoie to go to the university when he was accosted by four individuals. They knocked him down and prevented him from moving. One of the four attackers sprayed his face and his right hand with sulfuric acid.
Caignet had belonged to FANE, and he was a revisionist. He had been denounced by the weekly VSD (Vendredi/Samedi/ Dimanche). Following the attack with acid, his face looked so hideous that only two newspapers ventured to publish his photograph. The principal perpetrator of the attack, Yves Aziza, a medical student and the son of Charles Aziza (an assistant pharmacist at Montreuil), was identified by the police within an hour of the crime. But in this case, as in others, the French police and courts scandalously permitted Yves Aziza to flee to Germany and to Israel. At the Justice Ministry, an official named Main at the criminal affairs bureau (headed by Raoul Béteille) sarcastically evaded every question put to him with regard to the 14-day delay in opening a judicial inquiry. Among Yves Aziza's correspondents was Daniel Ziskind, the son of Michèle Ziskind, sister of Jean-Pierre Pierre-Bloch, who is himself the son of Jean Pierre-Bloch.

June 25, 1981
The first of several firebombings on the offices of the Institute for Historical Review, causing only minor damage. A man claiming to represent the "Jewish Defenders" announced responsibility for the attack in phone calls to news agencies. The second arson attack against the IHR office came on April 25, 1982, in which a copy machine, a few pieces of furniture and some records were damaged. In a telephone message to a local news agency, a group calling itself "the Jewish Defenders" claimed responsibility ("Arsonists hit Institute for Historical Review office," Daily Breeze (Torrance), July 5, 1984, p. A3). In an attack on September 5, 1982, the IHR office was riddled with gunfire, demolishing two windows and damaging the front door. Additionally, a small arson device caused some slight damage to the front of the office. Later that day, as throughout the week, came a barrage of murder-threatening telephone calls. Although the caller's voice was identified as that of JDL leader Mordechai Levy, typically, no one was arrested in the case ("Nazi Holocaust Doubters Target of Jewish Group," Los Angeles Times, August 1, 1985, p. B1)

Sept. 1, 1981
UNITED STATES. A flare was fired at the Long Island home of the Soviet ambassador to the United Nations. Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko was a guest at the time in the ambassador's home. Later in November (see November 14, 1981) a teenager was arrested and charged with the attack after several similar actions were carried out against Soviet interests and were claimed by the Jewish Defense League.

Sept. 3, 1981
UNITED STATES. New York. A small firebomb was discovered underneath a car parked near the Soviet Mission to the U.N. The unexploded devices were discovered after a phone call to police from an unidentified caller who claimed responsibility for the attack. The caller said he was a member of the militant wing of the Jewish Defense League called the Thunder of Zion, and the bombings were to gain the release of two imprisoned Soviet Jewish dissidents. The national director of the JDL denied responsibility for the attack but applauded the perpetrators for their actions.

Sept. 4, 1981
UNITED STATES. New York. A car belonging to a Nigerian diplomat was firebombed. There were no injuries and little damage. The car was parked at the Soviet U.N. mission and it was believed that the bomb was aimed at the Soviets. The Thunder of Zion branch of the Jewish Defense League claimed responsibility for the act but a later call from the JDL denied responsibility for the bombing but applauded it.

Sept. 7, 1981
UNITED STATES. A small bomb knocked out the window of a Manhattan bookstore that specializes in books published in the Soviet Union. There were no injuries. A militant Jewish group called the Thunder of Zion, protesting the treatment of Soviet Jews, claimed credit for the bombing. September 18, 1981
200 members of the Organisation juive de combat (OJC) or "Jewish Combat Organization" laid down the law at the Palace of Justice in Paris, where the defamation trial brought by Pierre Sidos, president of l'Oeuvre française, against Jean-Pierre Bloch was taking place. As usual, Jewish thugs beat up several of the spectators.

Oct. 25, 1981
UNITED STATES. The Egyptian government tourist office was firebombed in New York but resulted in no injuries. The two bombs were thrown through the window but only one exploded causing severe damage. A caller claiming to be a member of the Jewish Defense League claimed responsibility for the bombing and said it was a protest against the Camp David peace agreement which should be "buried with Sadat."

Nov. 14, 1981
UNITED STATES. The Long Island home of the Soviet delegate to the U.N. was fired upon but Oleg A. Troyanovsky and his wife were not at home at the time. The dozen or so shots shattered windows but caused no injuries and little damage. A man claiming to represent the Jewish Defense League telephoned wire services and claimed the attack was on the behalf of "Soviet Jews." Later, Meir Kahane, the international director of the League denied responsibility for the shooting but said, "We heartily applaud the act." On March 25, 1982, two Long Island teenagers pleaded guilty to the shooting into the Glen Cove mansion. They were accused of "harassing, annoying, and alarming" the occupants, against a section of the state civil rights law pertaining to harassment based on national origin. The youths face up to one year in jail and a $1000 fine.

Feb. 19, 1982
UNITED STATES. Two bombs exploded outside the Washington office of the Soviet airline Aeroflot, shattering a glass door but injuring no one. A man later telephoned The Associated Press and said that the explosions, about 200 feet down the street from the Soviet Embassy, were the work of the Jewish Defense League. The caller said that the organization was demanding the release of a teen-age girl held prisoner in the Soviet Union. In a similar call to the Washington Post, the girl was identified as Marina Tiemkin. The Soviet Embassy issued a protest to the U.S. State Department against this vicious act of terrorism.

Apr. 5, 1982
UNITED STATES. A deliberately-set fire destroyed a Lebanese restaurant in Brooklyn, New York, killing a woman who lived upstairs. The attack was claimed by callers who said they represented the Jewish Defense League (JDL) and maintained that the restaurant was used as a headquarters for the PLO. The JDL officially denied any involvement in the incident.

April 11, 1982
JDL member Allan Goodman opened fire with a machine gun at a Muslim house of worship in Jerusalem, killing two Palestinian Arabs: an elderly man and a 20-year-old youth. After entering the mosque, he continued firing, critically wounding several people. Goodman, from Baltimore, Maryland, had received paramilitary training at the JDL's Camp Jedel in New York state. In an interview, Kahane said of the crime, "There was nothing wrong with what he did...the act was perfectly correct." (Washington Post, April 12, 1982.; Village Voice, Oct. 2, 1984)

April 28, 1982
JDL bombs the Iraqi UN mission in NYC.

Apr. 28, 1982

April 1982
JDL thugs hurl two bricks through the front window of a suburban Los Angeles home owned by George Ashley, a high school history teacher and Holocaust revisionist. One month later, two gasoline fire bombs are thrown against the front of his house, and in December of 1982, JDL criminals ransack Ashley's home, causing an estimated $26,000 in damage. Mordechai Levy later boasted: "We warned him [Ashley] that if he continued his activity, he would pay a consequence...We warned that if the school board does not stop Ashley, we would stop him." (IHR Newsletter, June 1985, p. 10) In July 1984, Ashley received repeated telephone calls from someone who threatened to bomb his home. A JDL member identified by police from tape-recordings of the threats was later arrested (Daily Breeze (Torrance), Sept. 1, 1984). In August 1984, JDL member Michael S. Canale was arrested on suspicion of making a bomb threat against George Ashley (R. Varenchik, "Man who calls Holocaust a lie reports threat; JDL figure held," Los Angeles Daily News, Aug. 21, 1984, pp. 1, 8). In May 1985, Ashley's home was the target of a another bomb attack, in which no one was hurt. The letters "JDL" were spray-painted on the walkway leading to Ashley's front door (A. Jalon, "Bomb Hits Home of Holocaust Doubter," Los Angeles Times, May 16, 1985) and the group later claimed responsibility for the bombing

June 17, 1982
ITALY. Nezeyk Matar, 32, a Lebanese medical student and a PLO sympathizer, was killed by several gunmen in an ambush outside his home in Rome. The murder took place following an anti-Israeli march organized by the PLO and Italian leftists. Matar had gone to the march with Nemer Hammad, the head of the PLO's semiofficial Rome office. The murder was claimed by a caller from the Jewish Armed Resistance of the Jewish Defense League who said the killing was timed to coincide with the invasion of Lebanon by the Israeli government of Prime Minister Begin.
also:
ITALY. Kamal Hussein, 33, a Jordanian who was deputy chief of the PLO office in Rome, rushed to the scene of the murder of Nezeyk Matar on the street in Rome. Several hours later, he himself was killed when a shrapnel-loaded car bomb exploded as he drove his car from his garage outside of Rome. A woman passerby was injured in the blast. The PLO office in Rome blamed the killings on "terrorist squads of Prime Minister Menachem Begin who have a free hand in Rome and are trying to annihilate the political cadres of the Palestine people." An Israeli Embassy spokesman in Rome denied the charges, but a man claiming to represent the Jewish Armed Resistance of the Jewish Defense League, telephoned the Associated Press in New York and said the organization was responsible for the killings. He stated that the assassinations were timed to coincide with the Israeli invasion of Lebanon.

July 23, 1982
FRANCE. Fadl Dani, deputy director of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the organization's No. 2 man in France, was killed in a car bombing attack outside his home in Paris. There were conflicting reports from witnesses; some claiming three men threw a bomb into Dani's car and then fled in another vehicle. Dani had recently told French police he no longer needed them to guard him; he believed only the director of the PLO's office would be in danger. Ibrahim Souss, the director, blamed Israel for the assassination; the Israel embassy in Paris denied Israeli agents were to blame. A telephone call to the Agence France-Presse claiming that the extremist Jewish Defense League was responsible was held in doubt by the French police.

Aug. 18, 1982
FRANCE. The Jewish Defense League (JDL) claimed responsibility for an attack on the Air France offices in Paris, as a retaliation for the recent attacks by French terrorists on businesses linked to Israel.

Feb. 3, 1983
UNITED KINGDOM. Experts defused a letter-bomb sent to offices of the newspaper Soviet Weekly. The device was in a white envelope approximately 6 inches by 3 inches with an illegible postmark. No group claimed responsibility. An identical bomb was intercepted en route to the Soviet Embassy in Kensington district. Responsibility for the second letter-bomb was claimed by the JDL.

Feb. 17, 1983
UNITED STATES. A bomb shattered glass doors in the offices of Aeroflot Soviet Airlines and shook a nearby hotel. No injuries resulted. The Soviet Embassy building is less than a block away. Jewish Defense League claimed responsibility.

Feb. 22, 1983
UNITED KINGDOM. The American Embassy received a mail bomb which was detected in the mailroom and defused. The Jewish Defense League claimed credit, but the claim was generally discounted.

Aug. 8, 1983
UNITED STATES. The Secretary of the Ahmaddiya Movement in Islam (AMI) was shot and killed at his residence in Detroit, Michigan. Two molotov cocktails were also thrown into the house of AMI's Treasurer but failed to explode. The Jewish Defense League claimed credit for the incidents.

December 1983
JDL thugs assault Ernst Zündel on the steps of Toronto's Old City Hall. The JDL carried out another attack against him on February 6, 1984. In September 1984, Zündel's home in Toronto is damaged in a pipe-bomb attack. A group calling itself "The People's Liberation Army of the Jewish Defense League" claimed responsibility in a phone call to a local television station. In January 1985, a JDL mob attacked Zündel, his attorney Doug Christie and Christie's female legal secretary at the entrance to a Toronto courthouse.

January 1984
in Cologne, Germany, Professor Hermann Greive, a non-Jewish authority on Jewish religious writings, was shot to death by a member of Kahane's Kach group. The murder was reportedly carried out in keeping with a Jewish scriptural injunction that demands death for non-Jews who "pry" into Jewish religious writings. (Le Figaro (Paris), January 26, 1984, p. 4)

The climax of Jewish terrorist activity came in 1984, when one of the biggest Jewish terrorist organizations was revealed, composed of 27 young Jews living in Judea, Samaria, and the Golan Heights . The organization had planted bombs on Arab buses and carried out terrorist attacks. They had also planned and implemented the assassination of several Arab mayors in the West Bank and tried to blow up the Temple Mount . The members of the organization were arrested and given long prison sentences. In the end however, most of them were pardoned by the president at the time, Haim Herzog.

Feb. 24, 1984
UNITED STATES. Bombs were tossed over a fence surrounding the Soviet residential compound in the Bronx, New York. There were no injuries but a car was burned. Ten minutes after the attack the militant Jewish Direct Action took credit, however; later in the day a spokesman for JDA denied any involvement by the group. In May 1987 three JDL members were arrested in connection with this attack.

July 4, 1984
An arson attack by Irv Rubin's JDL totally destroys the warehouse and offices of the Institute for Historical Review in Torrance California. The damage is estimated at $400,000.

1985
The Santa Monica, California office of the German-American Political Action Committee is set ablaze. The PAC had previously taken the position that "Jews were not gassed by the Nazis...[and that] numbers and reports of predetermined extermination are greatly exaggerated by professional liars." The JDL claimed responsibility for this arson via an anonymous phone call (US Dept. of Energy, Terrorism in the United States and the Potential Threat to Nuclear Facilities, R-3351-Doe, January 1986, pp. 11-16)

Feb. 18, 1985
UNITED STATES. A police officer on patrol near the Soviet Mission to the United Nations observed a pipe bomb protruding from the gas tank of a vehicle belonging to the mission. The same car had been overturned on Christmas morning and spray-painted with the remark "never again" on its side. That act was claimed by the Jewish Defense League (JDL), which has a long history of harassment of the Soviets in the New York City area. Although no group has claimed responsibility for this act, the JDL remains the prime suspect.

Jan. 6, 1986
UNITED STATES. A crude bomb was discovered in a rubbish bin at the Boston Garden one hour before a hockey match between the Boston Bruins and a Soviet team. The Boston chapter of the Jewish Defense League condemned the action. The authorities acted after receiving an anonymous telephone call. The crude device consisted of a live hand grenade attached to a timing device.

Sept. 2, 1986
UNITED STATES. A tear-gas grenade was fired into the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, forcing the evacuation of the theater. The Soviet Union's Moiseyev Dance Company had left the stage just five minutes earlier. Minutes after the tear gas was released, the news service received a call that "members of the Jewish Defense League movement" were responsible for the action. Twenty one people were hospitalized, including the Soviet Ambassador, Yuri Dubinin. Three members of the JDL were arrested in May, 1987 in connection with this attack.

Oct. 20, 1986
UNITED STATES. A fire bomb exploded outside a stage door at the Lincoln Center in New York where the Moscow State Orchestra was performing. Cannisters containing a flammable liquid were found near the scene. A call to a news agency prior to the incident advised "there will be no Soviet Nazi performance until 3 million Soviet Jews are freed." The Jewish Defense League is considered a suspect.

June 30, 1987
UNITED STATES. The JDL's east coast faction, led by Vincent Jancier (a.k.a. Chaim Ben- Yosef) was responsible for an explosive device found in a trash can at Lincoln Center just before the Bolshoi Ballet was to perform. The device consisted of a grenade wrapped in aluminum foil and rigged to two batteries and a clock.

1987
three members of the Jewish Defense League were arrested for their involvement in at least six bombing attacks carried out the New York area between 1984 and 1987. The accused were Jay Cohen, Sharon Katz and Victor Vancier, head of the JDL in the New York area. After admitting his role in the terror bombings, Vancier was sentenced in October 1987 to ten years imprisonment. Another JDL member, Murray Young, was sentenced to five years in prison. (H. W. French, "3 J.D.L. Members Seized in Bombings," New York Times, May 9, 1987.; L. Buder, "Prison for Ex-J.D.L. Chief in Bombing," New York Times, Oct. 27, 1987, p. B3)

1985
JDL kills Waffen-SS veteran Tsherim Soobzokov with a terror bomb.

mid-August 1985
FBI officials believe the JDL was behind a Paterson, New Jersey bomb blast that killed Tscherim Soobzokov, and a similar (although non-fatal) bombing attack in early September 1985 directed against Elmars Sprogis in Brentwood, New York. Soobzokov and Sprogis were falsely alleged to have been "Nazi war criminals." (D. Palermo, "FBI Links JDL to Bomb Death of Arab Leader," Los Angeles Times, Nov. 9, 1985.; A. Dawson, "Terrorism experts puzzled by FBI's finding," Orange County Register (Santa Ana), Nov. 13, 1985, pp. B1, B6.; See also: Robert I. Friedman, "Nice Jewish Boys with Bombs: The Return of the JDL," Village Voice (New York), May 6, 1986, p. 24)

October 11, 1985
A JDL bomb kills Alex Odeh, West Coast regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, as he enters his group's office in Santa Ana, southern California (D. Palermo, "FBI Links JDL to Bomb Death of Arab Leader," Los Angeles Times, Nov. 9, 1985). Odeh's killers (Keith Fuchs, Andy Green and Robert Manning) flee to Israel, where the Israeli government does its best to provide them asylum, obstructing the US federal investigation and stalling extradition arrangements. Manning is finally extradited in July of 1993 (K. Reich, "Mail-Bomb Suspect Sent Back to U.S.," Los Angeles Times, July 19, 1993.; M. Parks & E. Malnic, "Israel Orders Murder Suspect Returned to L.A. for Trial," Los Angeles Times, August 17, 1993.) One condition for Manning's extradition to the US was that he would not be charged or prosecuted for his role in the Odeh killing. In October 1993, a federal jury in Los Angeles found Robert Manning guilty of complicity in the 1980 bomb death of a secretary at a computer company, 32-year-old Patricia Wilkerson ("Ex-JDL Activist Guilty of Bomb Death," Los Angeles Times (Orange County edition), Oct. 15, 1993, pp. A1, A12.)

January 14, 1988
in Lyon, Professor Jean-Claude Allard was hospitalized following a group attack against him for which the OJC claimed responsibility. The attackers ambushed him in the parking lot of the University of Lyon III. In June 1985, he had presided over the examining board of the thesis of revisionist scholar Henri Roques on "The 'Confessions' of Kurt Gerstein," which have been widely regarded as key evidence for Holocaust gassings. (In an action without precedent in French academic history, the thesis' defense was annulled under pressure by "angry" Jews)

February 10, 1988
terrorists set fire to the automobile of German historian Ernst Nolte while it was parked at the Free University in Berlin, where he was a professor. An anonymous letter, signed with a five-pointed star, declared: "We attack Nolte because he is one of those who personally represents the continuity of fascism" and as co-founder of a "reactionary" group called the "Academic Freedom League." Nolte had been widely criticized for his moderately revisionist views of Second World War history ("Attack Against Auto of German 'Revisionist' Historian," IHR Newsletter, July 1988, p. 5)

May 8, 1988
at Saint-Augustin Square in Paris, Tagar/Betar goon squads used iron bars to attack l'Oeuvre française supporters who were taking part in the traditional parade in honor of Joan of Arc. Some 15 supporters were injured, two of them very seriously. Four of the victims were hospitalized. A septuagenarian remained in a coma for several weeks. Ten OJC members were questioned by the police. That same afternoon Jean-Pierre Pierre-Bloch interceded with the criminal police investigation unit (police judiciaire) on their behalf. Legal proceedings were instituted against some of the attackers. Some attackers were released with the following notation by the examining magistrate: "preliminary examination inopportune." Other attackers were tried, though not without pressure "from the highest political level" being brought to bear on the public prosecutor's office. In total, only three of the attackers were tried. Each received a two-year suspended (!) prison sentence.

September 16, 1989
While out walking his poodle near his residence in Vichy, 60-year-old revisionist Dr. Robert Faurisson is accosted by three young men, who spray him with mace and then beat him horribly, inflicting a broken jaw and severe head injuries. If not for a passerby interrupting the assault, Faurisson probably would have been beaten to death. The group Les Fils de la Memoire Juif (The Sons of the Memory of the Jews) -- almost certainly the Tagar/Betar organization -- claims responsibility. Their statement reads "Professor Faurisson is the first, but will not be the last. Let those who deny the Shoah [Holocaust] beware." This was only the most severe of the ten attacks Faurisson experienced between November 1978 and May 1993.

October 16, 1989
precisely one month after the attack in Vichy, a bomb exploded at the door of the offices in Paris of Choc du mois, which were then ransacked. Credit for the attack was claimed by the "Jewish Combat Organization" (OJC) and some far left groups. Éric Letty, who had devoted an article in Choc du mois to Professor Faurisson, would have been killed had he not, by a miracle, detected the imminence of the explosion.

February 6, 1990
millions of viewers witnessed the brutal attack against Olivier Mathieu during a television broadcast emceed by Christophe Dechavanne. Jean-Pierre Pierre-Bloch came on to the stage with a group of Tagar/Betar militants. Mathieu had just time enough to exclaim: "Faurisson is right." Then ten or so of the thugs severely beat him, his fiancee, and Marc Botrel. Among those present was an important figure among Jewish militants: Moshe Cohen, a former second lieutenant of the Israeli army and an officer at the time of the Tagar organization, the student branch of the Betar (59 boulevard de Strasbourg, Paris Xe). The attacks continued off stage and out into the street. One attacker was questioned by the police, but released a few hours later on the intercession of Jean-Pierre Pierre-Bloch.

May 1990
Tagar/Betar members vandalize the "Ogmios" bookstore in Paris, which carried revisionist titles. The store closed in 1992 due to these attacks. Other bookstores attacked by Tagar/Betar include: Bleu-Blanc-Rouge, Librairie Française, Librairie de la Vieille Taupe stores, and Librairie de la Joyeuse Garde.

January 1991
Kurt Haber -- identified in newspaper reports as a "Jewish Holocaust survivor" -- was charged with making criminal threats against the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee. (K. Reich, "Holocaust Survivor Arrested After Alleged Threats," Los Angeles Times, Jan. 30, 1991)

April 20, 1991
About 50 Betar/Tagar thugs armed with iron bars and baseball bats carried out a violent attack against several persons attending a conference in Paris on the French writer Marc Augier. (Under the pen name of Saint-Loup, Augier wrote a series of books on the French "Legion of Volunteers," which fought on the eastern front during the Second World War.) Thirteen persons, most of them elderly, were injured, two of them very seriously. the chief of the Jewish Defense League in Israel announced that he was sending teams of killers to Germany to murder "neo-Nazis." Every German who cries "Heil Hitler," or otherwise identifies himself as a Nazi, declared 33-year-old Rabbi Baruch Ben-Joseph (Baruch Green), is a target for death ("Extremisten aus Israel: Jagd auf Neonazis in Deutschland?," Berliner Morgenpost, December 11 [or 12?], 1992.; Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Dec. 12, 1992, p. 6.). Prominent German far-right political figures are not the only persons on the Israel JDL's hit list, confided one JDL member: "Persons behind the scenes are often more important, such as the professor who denies or whitewashes the Holocaust in a book." (Michael Kneissler, "Tod den Nazis," Playboy (Deutschland), February 1993 (2/93), pp. 47-54.)

April 22, 1993
Jewish Defense Organization members attacked demonstrators who had gathered in Washington, DC, to protest the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. One of the victims was David Willcox, a 52-year-old employee of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. He was standing on a street corner when three men wearing black "paramilitary" uniforms and skull caps with the Star of David attacked, beating him on the head and legs with metal pipes. Willcox required hospitalization and 12 stitches in his head. Two JDO members later confirmed the attack against Willcox. JDO spokesman Michael Schneider told a reporter that his group would continue to do "whatever is necessary " to "defend" Jews, including attacking "enemies" in the street. The FBI said that it is investigating the attack against Willcox as a possible act of "domestic terrorism," while city police announced that they were looking into the incident as a possible "hate crime." (L. Goodstein, "Holocaust Museum Protester Later Beaten," The Washington Post, April 29, pp. C1, C2.; L. Kellman, "Hate crimes follow opening of museum," The Washington Times, April 24, 1993, p. (NY York Times, "Book Review" section, July 11, p. 1.) This is not true. The demonstration, which took place under police supervision some distance from the dedication ceremony site, was entirely peaceable. The only "interruption" connected with the day's events was violence committed against peaceful demonstrators.)

by re: King David
The King David Hotel was the site of the British military command and the British Criminal Investigation Division. The Irgun chose it as a target after British troops invaded the Jewish Agency June 29, 1946, and confiscated large quantities of documents. At about the same time, more than 2,500 Jews from all over Palestine were placed under arrest. The information about Jewish Agency operations, including intelligence activities in Arab countries, was taken to the King David Hotel.

Irgun leader Menachem Begin stressed his desire to avoid civilian casualties and said three telephone calls were placed, one to the hotel, another to the French Consulate, and a third to the Palestine Post, warning that explosives in the King David Hotel would soon be detonated.

On July 22, 1946, the calls were made. The call into the hotel was apparently received and ignored. Begin quotes one British official who supposedly refused to evacuate the building, saying: "We don't take orders from the Jews." As a result, when the bombs exploded, the casualty toll was high: a total of 91 killed and 45 injured. Among the casualties were 15 Jews. Few people in the hotel proper were injured by the blast.

For decades the British denied they had been warned. In 1979, a member of the British Parliament introduced evidence that the Irgun had issued the warning. He offered the testimony of a British officer who heard other officers in the King David Hotel bar joking about a Zionist threat to the headquarters. The officer who overheard the conversation immediately left the hotel and survived.

they would have bombed the place when it was full of Brits. Instead, they chose to slaughter the Arab staff.

If they wanted to kill anyone, they wouldn't have warned them 3 times.

What do you think would happen if the Palestinians tried this tactic?

Trick question- they would never. They aren't interested in targeting infrastructure- they are interested in human casualties. Thats why they pack their bombs with nails and screws that have been soaked in rat poison. They want to maximize the human pain and suffering.

by doubtful
If “they do it, too” were a valid excuse, Hitler would be off the hook for killing those six million Jews, because Stalin killed six million Ukrainians.

Iran's axis with the Third Reich began during the prewar years, when it welcomed Nazi Gestapo agents and other operatives to Tehran, allowing them to use the city as a base for Middle East agitation against the British and the region's Jews. ...

Shortly after World War II broke out in 1939, the Mufti of Jerusalem crafted a strategic alliance with Hitler to exchange Iraqi oil for active Arab and Islamic participation in the murder of Jews in the Mideast and Eastern Europe.

Early in the morning of Friday, April 9, 1948, commandos of the Irgun, headed by Menachem Begin, and the Stern Gang attacked Deir Yassin, a village with about 750 Palestinian residents. It was several weeks before the end of the British Mandate. The village lay outside of the area that the United Nations recommended be included in a future Jewish State. Deir Yassin had a peaceful reputation and was even said by a Jewish newspaper to have driven out some Arab militants. But it was located on high ground in the corridor between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and one plan, kept secret until years afterwards, called for it to be destroyed and the residents evacuated to make way for a small airfield that would supply the beleaguered Jewish residents of Jerusalem.

By noon over 100 people, half of them women and children, had been systematically murdered. Four commandos died at the hands of resisting Palestinians using old Mausers and muskets. Twenty-five male villagers were loaded into trucks, paraded through the Zakhron Yosef quarter in Jerusalem, and then taken to a stone quarry along the road between Givat Shaul and Deir Yassin and shot to death. The remaining residents were driven to Arab East Jerusalem.

That evening the Irgunists and the Sternists escorted a party of foreign correspondents to a house at Givat Shaul, a nearby Jewish settlement founded in 1906. Over tea and cookies they amplified the details of the operation and justified it, saying Deir Yassin had become a concentration point for Arabs, including Syrians and Iraqis, planning to attack the western suburbs of Jerusalem. They said that 25 members of the Haganah militia had reinforced the attack and claimed that an Arabic-speaking Jew had warned the villagers over a loudspeaker from an armored car. This was duly reported in The New York Times on April 10.

A final body count of 254 was reported by The New York Times on April 13, a day after they were finally buried. By then the leaders of the Haganah had distanced themselves from having participated in the attack and issued a statement denouncing the dissidents of Irgun and the Stern Gang, just as they had after the attack on the King David Hotel in July 1946. A 1987 study undertaken by Birzeit University's Center for Research and Documentation of Palestinian Society found "the numbers of those killed does not exceed 120".

The Haganah leaders admitted that the massacre "disgraced the cause of Jewish fighters and dishonored Jewish arms and the Jewish flag." They played down the fact that their militia had reinforced the terrorists' attack, even though they did not participate in the barbarism and looting during the subsequent "mopping up" operations.

They also played down the fact that, in Begin's words, "Deir Yassin was captured with the knowledge of the Haganah and with the approval of its commander" as a part of its "plan for establishing an airfield."

Ben Gurion even sent an apology to King Abdullah of Trans-Jordan. But this horrific act served the future State of Israel well. According to Begin:

* * *
Arabs throughout the country, induced to believe wild tales of "Irgun butchery," were seized with limitless panic and started to flee for their lives. This mass flight soon developed into a maddened, uncontrollable stampede. The political and economic significance of this development can hardly be overestimated.

* * *

Of about 144 houses, 10 were dynamited. The cemetery was later bulldozed and, like hundreds of other Palestinian villages to follow, Deir Yassin was wiped off the map. By September, Orthodox Jewish immigrants from Poland, Rumania, and Slovakia were settled there over the objections of Martin Buber, Cecil Roth and other Jewish leaders, who believed that the site of the massacre should be left uninhabited. The center of the village was renamed Givat Shaul Bet. As Jerusalem expanded, the land of Deir Yassin became part of the city and is now known simply as the area between Givat Shaul and the settlement of Har Nof on the western slopes of the mountain.

The massacre of Palestinians at Deir Yassin is one of the most significant events in 20th-century Palestinian and Israeli history. This is not because of its size or its brutality, but because it stands as the starkest early warning of a calculated depopulation of over 400 Arab villages and cities and the expulsion of over 700,000 Palestinian inhabitants to make room for survivors of the Holocaust and other Jews from the rest of the world.

Little is known of his Irgun career, but one incident stands out. In 1938 Yzernitzky and a 15-year-old recruit, Eliyahu Bet Zouri, tried to blow up a WZO defence fund collection booth which levied a toll on Jewish travellers leaving Tel Aviv. They planted a crude gunpowder bomb which went off prematurely, severely burning Bet Zouri’s legs and scorching the face of Israel’s future Prime Minister. The Irgun decided to attack Deir Yassin on April 9, while the Haganah was still engaged in the battle for Kastel. This was the first major Irgun attack against the Arabs. Previously, the Irgun and Lehi had concentrated their attacks against the British.

According to Irgun leader Menachem Begin, the assault was carried out by 100 members of that organization; other authors say it was as many as 132 men from both groups. Begin stated that a small open truck fitted with a loudspeaker was driven to the entrance of the village before the attack and broadcast a warning to civilians to evacuate the area, which many did. Most writers say the warning was never issued because the truck with the loudspeaker rolled into a ditch before it could broadcast the warning.4 One of the fighters said, the ditch was filled in and the truck continued on to the village. "One of us called out on the loudspeaker in Arabic, telling the inhabitants to put down their weapons and flee. I don't know if they heard, and I know these appeals had no effect."

Contrary to revisionist histories that the town was filled with peaceful innocents, residents and foreign troops opened fire on the attackers. One fighter described his experience:

My unit stormed and passed the first row of houses. I was among the first to enter the village. There were a few other guys with me, each encouraging the other to advance. At the top of the street I saw a man in khaki clothing running ahead. I thought he was one of ours. I ran after him and told him, "advance to that house." Suddenly he turned around, aimed his rifle and shot. He was an Iraqi soldier. I was hit in the foot.

The battle was ferocious and took several hours. The Irgun suffered 41 casualties, including four dead.

Surprisingly, after the “massacre,” the Irgun escorted a representative of the Red Cross through the town and held a press conference. The New York Times' subsequent description of the battle was essentially the same as Begin's. The Times said more than 200 Arabs were killed, 40 captured and 70 women and children were released. No hint of a massacre appeared in the report. “Paradoxically, the Jews say about 250 out of 400 village inhabitants [were killed], while Arab survivors say only 110 of 1,000.”7 A study by Bir Zeit University, based on discussions with each family from the village, arrived at a figure of 107 Arab civilians dead and 12 wounded, in addition to 13 "fighters," evidence that the number of dead was smaller than claimed and that the village did have troops based there.8 Other Arab sources have subsequently suggested the number may have been even lower.

In fact, the attackers left open an escape corridor from the village and more than 200 residents left unharmed. For example, at 9:30 A.M., about five hours after the fighting started, the Lehi evacuated 40 old men, women and children on trucks and took them to a base in Sheikh Bader. Later, the Arabs were taken to East Jerusalem. Starting at 2:00 P.M., residents were taken out of the village. The trucks passed through the Orthodox neighborhood of Mea Shearim after the Sabbath had begun, so the neighborhood people cursed and spit at them, not because they were Arabs, but because the vehicles were desecrating the Sabbath.

Early in the morning of April 9, 1948, commandos of the Irgun (headed by Menachem Begin) and the Stern Gang attacked Deir Yassin, a village with about 750 Palestinian residents. The village lay outside of the area to be assigned by the United Nations to the Jewish State; it had a peaceful reputation. But it was located on high ground in the corridor between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Deir Yassin was slated for occupation under Plan Dalet and the mainstream Jewish defense force, the Haganah, authorized the irregular terrorist forces of the Irgun and the Stern Gang to perform the takeover.

In all over 100 men, women, and children were systematically murdered. Fifty-three orphaned children were literally dumped along the wall of the Old City, where they were found by Miss Hind Husseini and brought behind the American Colony Hotel to her home, which was to become the Dar El-Tifl El-Arabi orphanage.

Part of the struggle for self-determination by Palestinians has been to tell the truth about Palestinians as victims of Zionism. For too long their history has been denied, and this denial has only served to further oppress and deliberately dehumanize Palestinians in Israel, inside the occupied territories, and outside in their diaspora.

Some progress has been made. Westerners now realize that Palestinians, as a people, do exist. And they have come to acknowledge that during the creation of the state of Israel, thousands of Palestinians were killed and over 700,000 were driven or frightened from their homes and lands on which they had lived for centuries.

Aside from the usual inflation of numbers and exaggeration, I'm actually willing to concede Deir Yassin. Irgun and the Stern Gang were severely punished by Ben-Gurion for the massacre, since it was an embarassment to the just and fair Israeli side of the War for Independence. They were no longer associated with the revolution because of this. Ben-Gurion was disgusted.

However, contrast that ONE instance of injustice to the many, many massacres of the Arabs on Jews in '48, which were encouraged and celebrated, and you get some feel of the whole situation.

In the weeks leading up to the beginning of the construction of the security barrier in Gush Etzion, local Arabs are racing to create facts on the ground. "In the full light of day and with the knowledge of the relevant authorities, intensive works have been underway during the past months to seize control of thousands of [acres] of uncultivated lands between the settlements of western Gush Etzion and the Green Line. The goal is to prevent any possibility of creating
territorial contiguity in the direction of Jerusalem and in the
direction of Beitar-Illit and Tsur Hadassah. In the last months, the Palestinians have expedited the pace of work undertaken in a number of parallel areas. So far, they've managed to seize control of hundreds of acres of state lands in the southwestern Gush, and one sees a similar picture unfolding in the central Gush and in the lands north of it."
As for the Civil Administration, 7,380 demolition orders have been issued against illegal Arab building projects in Judea and Samaria that have not been executed due to orders by the government.

Orders to dismantle hundreds of other illegal structures in the Negev also have not been carried out. Bedouins in the Negev have built thousands of illegal metal shacks on land that they have taken over during the past two decades. Instead of calling them "illegal" or "unauthorized" the government and state-run media call them "unrecognized villages."

A spokesman for the Negev District Police said recently that the
Arabs have erected over 35,000 illegal structures in that region. Few of these structures are ever demolished.
by King David Hotel
The Irgun claimed the warnings were given 25 - 27 minutes before the explosion, and this is concurred by the French Consulate and Palestine Post, whose secretary called the police at once. As for the King David Hotel, the British authorities denied for any years that there had been a warning, but the leaking of the secret police report on the bombing during the 1970s proved that a warning had indeed been received. The report claimed that the warning was only just being delivered to the British officer in charge as the bomb went off, but the initial telephone warning obviously was poorly communicated through the chain of command, as the all-clear signal was given. A British officer heard about the warning in advance of the bombing and lived. The fuses had been set to 30 minutes, and the women outside phoned in the warning shortly afterward. The staff in the kitchen were warned as well to evacuate well in advance, and they did

From the force of the explosion, four buildings in the area were demolished. Fifty-two corpses were found under the rubble and 32 people were injured, of whom six more died of their injuries.
It later turned out that the "British soldiers" were deserters who had been enlisted for the attack, with the promise of bribes, by the commander of the Arab forces in the Jerusalem area, Abed al-Kader al-Husseini"
