Thousands and thousands of anti-abortion protesters, carrying "Women Deserve Better" (than abortion) signs along with a few mutilated fetus pictures, marched through the blocked-off streets of San Francisco, from the Embarcadero to Fisherman's Wharf. A huge, excessive police presence kept the two apart, with foot and motorcycle cops ushering the permitted march through and keeping the counter protestors apart on the sidewalk. Up to 1,000 counter protestors followed on the sidewalk, chanting them down.

The rally was non-violent and appeared to be without arrests. Hear some of the pro-choice chants, including at the police for detaining a black-clad protestor for a "crime" of carrying water balloons on the sidewalk. (6 minutes)

From what I can tell, there were three pro-lifers with pictures of aborted fetuses...such pictures were discouraged by the organizers of the event, who said people should not bring them. While I suppose they can serve to shock people and perhaps provoke a reaction that might lead to thought about the issue, in the context of the Walk for Life I would say such pictures are needlessly provocative. Sure, if a person is debating with themselves over the morality of abortion, the pictures might have an effect on them. However, in a protest setting where people's minds are all made up fairly strongly, I agree with the organizers that such signs are not helpful.

As for the water balloons...really, would throwing water balloons at pro-lifers make the pro-choice side look any better? The pro-lifers were calm and (fairly) quiet, and refrained from physical attacks. The pro-choicers refrained from getting physical as well, though I imagine the woman with water balloons intended to throw them. The pro-choicers were not quiet or calm at all....which is rather odd considering that by and large they are winning (abortion is legal without many restrictions).
by oh really?
We're not exactly going to roll over and play dead. People who stay quiet when others try to take their rights away deserve what they get.
Abortion sells out women. It allows social inequality and sexism to continue. It is a form of violence which has no place in progressive politics. See Feminists for Life website for more info.
by just wondering
Why does Indybay publish this evil, anti-woman, anti-freedom propaganda and lies?

It's amazing what people will convince themselve of in order to demonize sex, and particularly women engaging in sex. We come from a very bizarre puritan culture where we sell sex at every turn and yet also couple it with shame and violence. No wonder there is more sexual violence in our culture than anywhere else. Abortion hardly sells out women, it gives them determination over their own life. It makes them have a choice whether they want to breed or not. Take that right away and you've essentially reduced them to domesticated livestock, which is the real subtext of the anti-abortion argument. They want to own sex, own the womb, own the body, own the woman. She should have no free will over her life and her sex orgins, because God forbid she thinks and acts for herself. No where has the discussion of men and their role in sex has even been addressed int he pro-life depbate. What about men refraining from havings ex with the women they don't intend to impregnate. Why is the responsibility and the shame always on the women for their particiapation in an unwanted pregenancy? Why? Because in their insane facist sexist logic, sex for men is fine, sex for women is evil. It goes back to all the crazy conditioning of the Judeao-Christian-Muslim tradition of men on top and women as his property, in which he may impregnate and rape at will. This is the basis of it all. Who owns who. Eveything else is a smoke screen.
