SPRING 2006 LABOR STUDIES SPRING CLASSES BEGIN JAN 31

The Strike for Comparable Worth in San Jose took place 25 years ago when predominantly women activists in the, American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Local 101 (AFSCME), along with women political leaders claimed that lower wages for women's jobs were discriminatory and a violation of women’s civil rights. In 1981 city workers in San Jose, California, won the right to comparable worth wages after predominantly female clerical, library, and recreation workers went on strike, using the issue of comparable worth to win substantial wage increases…

Comparable worth actions started emerged across the country to prohibit race and sex discrimination in employment, by arguing that unequal pay for work of equivalent values that prevailing "market" wages represent the institutionalization of past discriminatory practices.

Even without a national legal standard, many local and state cases have succeeded through legislative and collective bargaining routes. In 1984 newly unionized women clerical and technical workers at Yale University went on a ten-week strike, using the issue of comparable worth to win substantial wage increases.
