Sponsors “Reshaping Community” Symposium

Addressing Police Brutality, Promoting Community Peace

11/7/05—The Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality, Inc.
will sponsor “Reshaping Community: Ending 50+ Years of
Police Brutality,” a two-day Symposium to address issues of
police brutality and misconduct. All events will be held
Friday-Saturday, November 18-19, 2005, at Wayne County
Community College District’s Downtown Campus, 801 W. Fort
St., Detroit, Michigan. Featured speakers include noted
activist Rev. Al Sharpton and WDIV-4 Reporter Derricke
Dennis, as well as elected officials, representatives from
the legal and law enforcement communites, the hip-hop
community, and members of the Detroit Coalition Against
Police Brutality. For information, call the Coalition at

Friday, November 18:

“Honoring Our Past,” 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., Atrium, Wayne County
Community College District, Downtown Campus:
This will be an Awards Dinner to recognize and celebrate the
commitment of those who have worked in the struggle to end
police brutality. The Coalition will present a special award
to 6th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Damon Keith, who was
part of an organization of the same name (“Coalition Against
Police Brutality”) in the early 1950’s. Many other individuals
will be honored, including posthumous awards to the late
Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young, and the late Judge George
Crockett, Jr. Families of police brutality victims will also
be recognized. DINNER COST: $30.00/individual and
$250.00/table. A portion of the ticket proceeds will benefit
the Coalition’s defense fund for victims and their families.

Saturday, November 19:

“This event is a first for the Coalition,” said spokesperson
Ron Scott. “We plan in these two days to provide a
comprehensive public policy analysis, build a multi-
generational, cohesive response to police brutality, and
uncover ways for police and citizens to work collaboratively
to ‘increase the peace.’ Our presenters will also help us to
define areas of research needed to help us do this work more
effectively.”

A conference report will be published and released shortly
after the Symposium proceedings.
