Sacramento City Council to weigh-in
on Iraq War controversy; Will consider
measure Tuesday calling for US withdrawal
SACRAMENTO – The Sacramento City Council Tuesday night will consider a
resolution calling on Congress and President Bush to "commence" the
withdrawal of all U.S. troops from Iraq, according to a coalition of area
peace organizations.
A major news conference will be held at 6 p.m. TUESDAY in front of City
Hall (new addition, 915 I St.) to discuss the resolution, said the
Sacramento Coalition to End the War.
The City Council is due to hear the resolution – co-sponsored by Council
members Ray Tretheway and Lauren Hammond – at its scheduled 7 p.m. meeting.
The resolution calls for a "a humane, orderly, rapid and comprehensive
withdrawal of United States military personnel and bases from Iraq," and
asks Congress and Bush to deliver "promised veterans' health, education,
disability, and rehabilitation benefits, and otherwise meet the needs of
returning veterans."
The resolution cites the high costs of the war, specifically to Sacramento
in terms of lives lost and disrupted as well as monies now being spent for
Iraq that could be used to improve Sacramento levees, flood protection,
education, healthcare and security.
If approved, Sacramento will join scores of other U.S. cities to approve
anti-war resolutions, and one of only a few to call for an immediate, or
rapid withdrawal.

The Sacramento Peace group is misguided. The purpose of the Federal Govt. is to provide for the common defense. Our federal tax dollars should only be spent on the Military, Homeland Security, and federal law enforcement, things that aid in a common defense. Our founding fathers never planned on providing for healthcare, food, and all the other welfare benefits people seem to want. If you want medical benefits, get a job.
As far as Military benefits for veterans, as a veteran, I can tell you the benefits are more than ample and cover the needs of the military. Again, I am at a loss as to what people seem to be complaining about.
And last, I would argue that any withdrawal would be a huge mistake as our military is fighting a war on the enemies home turf, the middle east. The moment we pull back the enemy, Arab extremists, will fill that void and start to fight the war on our turf, we don't want that. Remember the horror of New York and the Pentagon. Come on people, do some critical thinking and get your heads out of the clouds. The quickest way to peace is the destruction of the enemy, it was true during the Civil War, it was true during WWII and it is true now. Complete victory goes a long way and we should be willing to stick it out, we owe it to the victims of 9/11, all our service men and women, and all victims of terror around the world.
