JOHN NICHOLS & ROBERT McCHESNEY
speaking on "How the media sell wars, spin elections, and destroy democracy"

First Unitarian Universalist Church, Starr King Room
1187 Franklin Street (at Geary Blvd.), San Francisco
John Nichols and Robert McChesney - two of the country’s foremost media analysts and founders of the national media reform group Free Press (http://www.freepress.net) - will discuss how the media have failed to properly cover war and a popular election, and the burgeoning media reform movement.

They will be joined by Andrea Buffa from Global Exchange (http://www.globalexchange.org ) and Paul Jay from International World Television (http://www.IWTnews.com ).

The event is part of Nichols’ and McChesney’s national tour promoting their new book: Tragedy & Farce: How the American media sell wars, spin elections, and destroy democracy. Tragedy & Farce is both an exposé and a call to action. Nichols and McChesney take on the corporate interests and political strategists that influence the spin on news, and often more importantly, the omission of news – such as CBS’ decision to delay airing of a story on the administration’s manipulation of intelligence to make the case for war – until after the Nov. 2 Election. Documenting the decline in resources and standards for political journalism and examining the organized campaign by the political right to control the news cycle, Nichols and McChesney provide an essential framework by which to judge the role played by the media in American democracy. They make a powerful case for media reform as one of the most pressing agendas in our contemporary democracy.

A $5-$10 donation is requested. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Sponsored by: Free Press, Global Exchange, Independent World Television, Media Alliance, New College Media Studies MA Program, the Ruth Group and others.

JOHN ROSS speaks on: The "Sexta" - The Zapatistas and Mexico's Presidential Election

New College Theater, 777 Valencia St, San Francisco

John Ross, award-winning journalist, activist, poet, human shield and globetrotting troublemaker, will present a public lecture at New College, updating the on-going Zapatista rebellion in Chiapas and its plans for Mexico's 2006 presidential election.

This June, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation issued the Sixth Declaration of the Lacandon Jungle ("La Sexta") calling for an alliance of all non-party struggle groups in Mexico to forge a new constitution that would abolish neo-liberal outrages. The Zapatistas' "La Otra Campana" ("The Other Campaign") will unfold parallel to the 2006 presidential election year.

Donations welcome, no one turned away.

Sponsored by New College Media Studies MA Program, Global Exchange, others.
